The Business of Fashion: Who are you?
Thanks to the more than 65 of you who filled out the Business of Fashion survey to help us learn more about the BoF community. While this is by no means a scientific sample, it does represent the demographics, behaviour and opinions of the core audience who turns to this site most often. I thought the least I could do was share our learnings with you.
The biggest takeaway, especially through your detailed written comments, was that the BoF has really become a space for industry professionals to inform themselves and engage with each other on both creative and business issues. We will continue to build on this in the months to come and have really appreciated that more of you have been clicking on the comments button to let us know what you think. One of our goals, is to increase the amount of commenting by a signficant order of magnitude. This means providing you with content that engages you, but it also means that you should click that comment button and join the discussion.
We’ll keep the survey open for another few week or so in case you haven’t yet had a chance to respond and would like to share your thoughts. Here are the headlines about the BoF community from the survey results:
You represent all facets of the fashion industry
About a third of you come from the business side of the industry: CEOs, managing directors, senior executives, brand managers, investors and even some business and economics students. Another third come from the creative side: designers, stylists, fashion students, and PRs. The remainder is a mixture of academics, journalists, media personalities, entrepreneurs, and my favourite, a "waitress extraordinaire while I am working on my own fashion business."
You are a highly educated and international
Almost 50% of you are educated to a Masters or PhD level, and 80% of you hold a college degree. You are also a highly international community, with the BoF regularly receiving visitors from over 140 countries, with the biggest representation coming from the USA, UK, India, France, Italy, Germany, Singapore, Canada and Australia. It seems the fashion business even garners interest in countries with much bigger issues than Marc Jacobs last collection, as we have also had visitors from Iraq, the Palestinian Authority and Iran.
You are avid consumers of fashion and business media
Not surprisingly, 95% of survey respondents are regular readers, visiting The Business of Fashion at least once a week, and 40% are subscribers via RSS feed or email. (Click here to sign up for real-time emails with each new full post from the BoF). Many of you also read Style.com (70%), WWD (50%), The Wall Street Journal (35%) and The Financial Times (25%), and you are avid readers of fashion blogs and trend sites like The Sartorialist (50%), JC Report (40%), and Fashion Inc (20%).
