10 days until FASHION PIONEERS interview with Jefferson Hack, 29 April 2010

LONDON, United Kingdom — There are only 10 days until The Business of Fashion’s first FASHION PIONEERS interview with Jefferson Hack, Editorial Director of Dazed Group, at London’s Sanderson Hotel, and tickets for the live interview event have been snapped up at a rapid clip.

Already, fifty percent of the seats are gone. So, for those of you in London, given that everyone’s travel plans have been put on hold by that pesky, unpronounceable volcano in Iceland, why not join us for an evening that you can reach by tube, bus or taxi? No airplane required.

On 29 April, an intimate crowd of BoF readers, creative and business leaders, and digital innovators from London’s fashion community will gather to listen to Jefferson Hack speak about his fashion media career spanning almost two decades, the future of fashion magazines, and the East London hotbed from which he builds his creative teams for Dazed & Confused, Dazed Digital, AnOther Magazine and AnOther Man.

Since FASHION PIONEERS was unveiled, we have received requests from frustrated (and enthusiastic) BoF readers outside London asking whether they would be able to participate in the interview somehow. We are working on livestreaming the event and will be taking questions for Jefferson via Twitter, so as many of you can participate as possible. Send a tweet to @_BoF_ with your questions and stay tuned to BoF for more news.

Limited remaining tickets available for FASHION PIONEERS available here at £40, plus VAT.

Fashion 2.0 | Suzy Menkes on the Growing Influence of Fashion Blogs

BERLIN, Germany — A big thank you to PREMIUM and Mary Scherpe of Stil in Berlin for inviting me to join an esteemed panel of German fashion experts Christoph Amend of Zeit Magazin, Marcus Luft of Gala and  Too Posh to Push, and Sven Schoene of PR Agency K-MB to discuss the future of fashion media on the first day of Berlin Fashion Week.

The panel began with the esteemed Suzy Menkes, who wasn’t able to participate in person, but declared via video: “The world changed when fashion instead of being a monologue, became a conversation. And that’s never going to stop.”

Suzy, of course, was amongst the first of the mainstream fashion editors to reach out to bloggers and engage them as professionals. “A good blogger,” she says, “can really take all sorts of elements and use them both in words and pictures and make a strong statement.”

She’s “tremendously in favour of anything that is new and fresh in fashion,” but the one thing that concerns her is that “some bloggers believe, in their innocence, that they are completely independent in what they say.” In between the lines, Suzy advises bloggers to be wary of the increasing pressure they receive from brands to evangelise brands and products.

The video also features Julia and Jessie from Les Mads, Jennine from The Coveted and Yvan from The Facehunter, each of whom provide their own perspectives on how quickly the fashion blogosphere is rising in influence and prevalence.

Fashion E-Commerce | How are you engaging in an online dialogue?

LONDON, United Kingdom —  In our next snippet from the E-Commerce Day talk at the 9 Festival for Fashion & Photography, we discuss the how online fashion retailers including Sarah Curran, CEO of my-wardrobe.com, José Neves, CEO of farfetch.com and Stephanie Phair, Director of theoutnet.com, are engaging with their fans through blogs, Twitter, Facebook and daily feedback updates to get to know their customers’ needs, wants and opinions.

Just today, Women’s Wear Daily posted a front-page article on how the fashion industry is coming to terms with social media, indicating that these tools have finally hit the radar screens of the industry at large. This is great news, possibly catalysed by the fact that marketing and advertising budgets have been slashed so fashion brands and retailers are looking for cost-effective (read: free) ways of getting the word out. Social media has hit the fashion mainstream, and from our discussion it was clear that our panelists are at the cutting edge.

How are you engaging in an online dialogue? Stephanie Phair said theOutnet.com is always listening, carefully monitoring feedback, blogs and posts about the brand new off-price site for Net-a-Porter, Sarah Curran has hired a full-time my-wardrobe.com resource to engage with bloggers and José Neves speaks of respecting bloggers and giving them the information they want about farfetch.com.

Fashion E-Commerce | How are your clients changing their shopping habits in the downturn?

LONDON, United Kingdom London, of course, is widely known in the fashion world for its unbridled creativity and superb emerging fashion talent. But, increasingly, it could also be described as fashion’s Silicon Valley, with a growing number of innovative fashion ecommerce startups sprouting in the city, following in the footsteps of the ultimate luxury e-tailing pioneer, Net-a-Porter.com.

During my visit to Vienna for the 9 Festival for Fashion & Photography, I had the privilege of hosting a discussion amongst some of the newest fashion e-tailers on the London scene, bringing together Sarah Curran, CEO of my-wardrobe.com, José Neves, CEO of farfetch.com and Stephanie Phair, Director of theoutnet.com.

Thanks to our easy-to-use Flip Video Mino, we managed to capture some of the most poignant responses from our illustrious panel and are pleased to share them with you in the coming weeks. First up: How are your clients changing their shopping habits in the downturn?
