  1. This article on fashion and feminism shows a superficial approach to social and political issues that can damage the industry of fashion.

    Feminism is a powerful approach to read the social practices and ways of life that are the outcomes of cultures which are repressive of women.

    The feminist approach to philosophical thinking, and therefore to all issues that concern life in society, is structured on unveiling how contemporary societies experience a systematic “privileging of male over female, masculine over feminine and men over women” (Hutchings).

    The question is: does fashion follow this practice? Does it contribute, in some way, to maintaining this dominant culture? The answer cannot be a straightforward, as fashion is a multifaceted business with implications affecting all layers of society. A visual culture such as fashion can enable women to express their femininity with pride and with no fear of repression. However, it is also sometimes given importance in societies that discriminate women.

    Furthermore, the way in which models are used by the industry to convince women to buy their products is quite conflicting with feminism. At the same time, the engagement of some designers who produce collections that are truly designed for real women and their lifestyles is admirable.

    There is scope for a collaboration between fashion and feminist thinking. It is a territory worth exploring, as it can contribute towards a fairer fashion industry. The only thing to avoid is superficiality, or we risk making trivial statements such as “fashion is good as it is beautiful.”

    It is time for this industry to come of age and start behaving like a responsible entity.

  2. I completely aggree. From the onset, “Femminism is fashionable”, we can see that the industry is simply tapping into its inherent bond with the ‘woman’ but not with femininity and feminism. Yes, Prada’s SS14 Collection was the sartorial answer to many different types of women, but can that truly be considered a feminist ideal? I would see it more as simply a job well done by Miuccia Prada.
    Labels are often thrown around in the fashion industry – we must be careful and choose our words wisely. As Mr. Cipriani said, it is time fashion matured.
    The article mentions the fact that in the past years, collections have often been interpreted with a feminist tone. However, there is a fundamental difference between tailoring and masculine silhouettes being en vogue and ‘Feminism’ – it is a profound ideology which cannot just be thrown around. I also feel as if feminism cannot be pushed down people’s throats as it seems to be beginning to in the industry; a model will have chosen to be a model and a woman has every right to focus on her appearance if it makes her feel more confident, fashion empowers and feminism is simply a dangerous word to associate with the inherent “feel good” goal of the industry. All that said, I am only 21 years old and perhaps i too have to mature before truly understanding and being able to pass judgement!
