Biography

Erdem Moralioğlu is the eponymous founder of fashion label Erdem, which he started in 2005 with a collection of softly sweeping dresses and floral prints, now a part of his signature aesthetic. The half-Turkish and half-British designer was born in Montréal, where he also grew up, and took a great interest in fashion at a young age. “I was preoccupied with the way women looked and their accoutrements from a very early age, like my mother’s Saint Laurent lipstick or her Guerlain Shalimar perfume. I found these codes of femininity really interesting,” he told Matches Fashion.

Moralioğlu earned a bachelor's degree in fashion at Ryerson University in Toronto before moving to London in 2001 to attend the Royal College of Art, having been inspired by his mother, who hailed from Birmingham, to steep himself in British culture and fashion. He interned at Vivienne Westwood and, although a stint at Diane von Furstenberg after graduation took him to New York for a year, he quickly returned to establish his home base and studio in Shoreditch, East London.

Since then, the bespectacled designer has won fans with his blend of overtly feminine silhouettes and moody, meticulous prints. Erdem is now stocked at prominent stockists around the world, including Barneys, Selfridges, Harvey Nichols, and more. His brand of pretty, intellectual designs have earned him critical praise as well, most notably the British Fashion Council’s Design Fashion Fund prize in 2010.
