Julie Gilhart is a freelance fashion consultant. Prior to her work as a consultant Gilhart was the fashion director of New York department store Barneys. Gilhart consults for Amazon.com, working on Amazon Clothing Store, Endless and MyHabit, and numerous other brands including Tory Burch.
Gilhart was born in Dallas and raised by her mother, aunt and grandmother. Following college she took a buying job at Neiman Marcus, where she stayed for five years, before travelling the world. Upon her return in 1992 she was offered a job at Barneys, without even applying. Gilhart would go on to work at the store for 18 years.
Gilhart was, and remains renowned for her ability to identify trends, and her championing of smaller designers, in New York’s competitive retail environment. Gilhart would introduce fresh talent that included Philip Lim, Proenza Schouler Gareth Pugh and Joseph Altuzzura.
Gilhart is an active campaigner on environmental issues; she was the driving force behind Barney’s 2007 ‘Green Holiday’ Christmas campaign, backed organic brand Rogan Gregory and consults on Treasure and Bond, Nordstrom’s not-for-profit store.
Gilhart loves to surf and takes the opportunity to do so whenever possible.
