Biography

Appointed to the role of chief executive officer of the Retail Business of Al Tayer Group in 2011, a multi-division conglomerate based in the UAE, Khalid Al Tayer hosts the retail operations for luxury brands and retail chains within the UAE and the wider Gulf region. Operated under Al Tayer Insignia and Al Tayer Trends, the group holds franchise agreements for over 36 luxury brands including Dolce and Gabbana, Stella McCartney and Balenciaga, along with exclusive licenses for Harvey Nichols and Bloomingdales.

Khalid graduated with a Bachelors of Science in entrepreneurship, corporate finance and economics from the highly selective Babson College in America in 1999. His first venture into retail began shortly after as co-founder of Makook.com with college classmate Rishi Bojhwani. The internet start-up was launched in July 2001 and provided an online auction platform, similar to that of Ebay, to the UAE market and was a winner at the Dubai Internet City E-Biz Challenge.

In his short time at the helm of the retail business, Khalid has spearheaded Joint Venture arrangements with Gucci and Prada, and in May 2013 the group announced an additional Joint Venture agreement with Saint Laurent, starting with the opening of a flagship YSL store in Abu Dhabi in 2013. Prior to joining the Al Tayer group as group general manager in 2005, Khalid worked as a junior associate at McKinsey & Co. and as assistant vice president of Emirates Financial Services. The business mogul also currently serves on the board of directors of the Central Bank of the UAE.
