Biography

Michael Burke is chief executive of Louis Vuitton and one of LVMH chairman Bernard Arnault’s most trusted executives.

Vanessa Friedman of the Financial Times describes Burke as “a famously smiley and personable manager,” similar in style to Yves Carcelle, his predecessor at Louis Vuitton.

Burke faces different challenges to Carcelle however. “Our challenge today is to continue offering exceptional and unforgettable experiences in each one of our stores, our focus today is the qualitative development of our retail network,” he told WWD.

Burke has worked with Mr Arnault since 1986, before LVMH was formed. From the group’s founding, and throughout its expansion, Burke has held a variety of key positions at the group, including chief executive of Christian Dior Couture in the United States, chief executive of Louis Vuitton North America and chief executive of Fendi. Immediately prior to his current appointment to Louis Vuitton, Burke was chief executive of Bulgari.

Joking to the Financial Times, Burke claims to have asked Arnault not to give him the Louis Vuitton role, which required him to move from Rome to Paris, as every time he moved his wife would become pregnant. Burke is married with five children.
