Thomas Lenthal is the art director of System, a title he launched with Jonathan Wingfield, Alexia Niedzielski and Elizabeth von Guttman. The magazine’s first issue included Nicolas Ghesquière’s first interview since leaving Balenciaga.
Lenthal and Wingfield also publish Paradis, ‘an occasional review,’ which has featured photo stories by Juergen Teller and won the 2008 Club des Directeurs Artistiques best magazine award.
Lenthal was creative director of French Glamour from 1994 to 1998, which he left to co-found the upmarket fashion magazine Numéro. He has also art directed commercial campaigns for brands like Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Kenzo, Tod’s and Sonia Rykiel. One of his most famous campaigns was commissioned by John Galliano whilst he was still creative director at Dior. Shot by Nick Knight, the scene initially looked like police scene reportage. “It was meant to be outrageous,” Lenthal told Eye Magazine. ‘The client said, “Please, do burn down the house.”
Lenthal acted in the role of head of image at Christian Dior Couture and art director of Yves Saint Laurent. Through his work Lenthal has collaborated with Nick Knight, Mario Sorrenti, Inez Van Lamsweerde et Vinoodh Matadin, Mert Alas and Marcus Pigott, Juergen Teller, Mario Testino and Sølve Sundsbø.
