NEW YORK, United States — To mark five years in business, Tome designers Ryan Lobo and Ramon Martin took the ideas they've been playing with season after season — twisted shirting, Wild Sargasso Sea frills — and had a little fun, mixing in a harlequin-diamond print and adding a layer of sparkle, draping certain pieces in Swarovski-sequin netting tied up like a sarong.
What distinguishes Tome, however, is how well the duo’s clothes fit. They demonstrated this skill through the show’s diverse casting, using women of different sizes, ages, ethnic backgrounds and walks of life, whose bodies were anything but hanger-like. The industry is nowhere near where it should be when it comes to diversity on the runway but it takes designers like Lobo and Martin who drive the message home season after season to affect change.
