Esteban Cortazar’s Homecoming

These were elegant clothes with rustic touches that reminded the audience of the purity of Cortazar’s talent. New York should be happy to have him back.

NEW YORK, United States — Esteban Cortazar — the one-time boy wonder who presented his first collection at NYFW back in 2002 at the age of 18 — fled to Paris more than a decade ago. However, when IMG invited him to show his latest range at Spring Studios — the season's official venue — he happily obliged. Some members of his team had never been to New York, and he wanted to "give them the experience," he said backstage. "This is where it all started for me."

The collection was as much inspired by his Colombian roots as the ease of American sportswear: wool flannel trousers were dabbed with colourful explosions of brushed mohair, the fishtail on a clear-Cerulean blue anorak was exaggerated to eye-catching proportions, and a tough denim jacket was tied up delicately with a thin red string. Never too fussy, these were elegant clothes with rustic touches that reminded the audience of the purity of Cortazar’s talent. New York should be happy to have him back.
