Carolina Herrera to Stage Runway Show at MoMA

NEW YORK, United States — From Lincoln Center to the Frick Collection, Carolina Herrera has a penchant for staging runway shows in Manhattan landmarks. But this season's choice might be the most venerable.

On Monday, September 11, at 8pm ET, Herrera will debut her Spring/Summer 2018 collection in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden at the Museum of Modern Art, the first runway show ever to take place at the cultural institution. Herrera has also committed to showing her Autumn/Winter 2018 collection at MoMA in February, although the exact location of where that collection will be shown within the museum — given that the dead of winter does not make for comfortable sculpture-garden viewing — is to be determined.

"Fashion is ephemeral art in movement that is constantly changing," Herrera told BoF via email. "As a designer, it is an enormous honor to be allowed to show my work at the MoMA, one of the world's greatest museums of modern art."

While many designers have utilised art museums or galleries as show venues — both Proenza Schouler and Tory Burch have chosen the Whitney in recent seasons — there is a certain significance to MoMA, which is staging its first fashion exhibition in 73 years this autumn.

Opening October 1,"Items: Is Fashion Modern?", a collection of 111 iconic pieces of clothing and accessories from 20th and 21st centuries, will explore the relationship between fashion and everything from politics and technology to identity and economics. The hope, perhaps, is that Herrera's show will spark conversation in the weeks prior.
