LONDON, United Kingdom — The director of the acclaimed Victoria and Albert Museum will leave his post this autumn.

Martin Roth said Monday he has decided to step down after serving for five years. He is a German native who has expressed displeasure with Britain's vote in June to leave the European Union.

Roth's tenure was marked by a series of successes including extensive exhibitions about singer David Bowie and designer Alexander McQueen.

The 61-year-old Roth, citing recent honours awarded to the art and design museum, said it seemed "the perfect moment" to end his mission in London.

Trustee Chairman Nicholas Coleridge praised Roth and said the search for a new director would now begin.
