LONDON, United Kingdom — David Collins, the interior designer and architect best known for creating gem-like bars and restaurants, including London institutions like The Wolseley and the bar at The Connaught hotel, has died at the age of 58 due to complications relating to a virulent form of skin cancer that was diagnosed only three weeks ago, his office has announced.
"It is with great sadness that we announce the death of David Collins following a short but valiant battle with cancer. David died this morning at 1.20am surrounded by his family and loved ones. A truly gifted and inspirational man who has left us with some of the most remarkable and treasured interiors," read a message on his company's website.
Recently, Collins was increasingly in demand amongst luxury fashion clients, including Bergdorf Goodman, Harrods, Jimmy Choo and Alexander McQueen, for whom he developed rich and innovative store concepts. The colour blue was of recurring significance to his work.
"I was so sorry to hear of the passing of David Collins,” said BoF editor-in-chief Imran Amed. “My favourite place to meet people in London is the bar at The Connaught hotel. It is just one example of how David was able to create spaces with real energy and emotion that enabled personal interactions. Everyone on the BoF team passes on our condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.”
