LONDON, United Kingdom — This was one of those weeks you could never dream up, but also one which I will never forget.
When I asked Tim Blanks about what it was like to receive the CFDA Media Award in honour of Eugenia Sheppard, and for any advice he had on making it through the evening, all he said was, "I went onto complete autopilot, and was only shocked out of my fugue state by Riccardo Tisci's afterparty in a hellish divebar. I'm sure you'll have an absolutely sensational time — you'll be revered!"
Indeed, the night was full of excitement and revery, and so many congratulations, but it also forced me to step back and take stock of the people who helped me along this journey, especially all of you, our readers, some of whom have been following BoF for almost 10 years. (That's you La Genevoise, Julie Fredrickson, Diane Pernet and Gentry Lane!)
As a note of gratitude, I wanted to share the video and text of my acceptance speech with the BoF Community to thank you for all your support and feedback over the years. Hopefully, there are many more years to come.
"Thank you Alexa, and thanks very much to the CFDA for this incredible honour.
Ten years ago, as I embarked on this journey to learn about the business of fashion, I had no idea where it would take me, or that it would bring me here to have the honour to stand in front of you, the best of the best in American fashion.
From a young age, I was fascinated by the intersection of creativity and business, of uniting people across global cultures and celebrating diverse communities. These were the things I dreamed about. Years later, I now know that it is only because of the community of people around me that I have been able to realise my dreams and these are the people I'd like to thank today.
It starts with my team at BoF. I accept this on their behalf because without them, none of what we do would be possible.
My community also includes my family and friends who have nourished me with their love and support.
Which brings me to all of you, our readers who wake up with us every morning. Over the past 10 years, I have met with thousands of you on six continents, in more than thirty countries. Everywhere I have gone, you have welcomed me like an old friend. You have been so generous with your time, your insights, your knowledge and your creativity.
But the single best reward of having founded BoF is being part of this talented community. And it is your engagement and support that has shaped BoF into the independent voice it is today — a voice this industry needs, and a voice that I hope will be around for many years to come."
