Job in Focus: Exclusive Capsule Manager - CK E-Commerce

Interviewees: Milena Lubosch, director of buying and site merchandising for Calvin Klein e-commerce team, and Lucy Salter, talent acquisition manager.

What advice can you share for the interview process?

ML: I really respect a candidate that can question the status quo. Interviews are not just about pleasing the business you want to work for. I am impressed when you bring in some feedback that pushes us further and it shows me a candidate’s true character and how they tackle feedback, whether criticism is constructive. We also look at a sense of humility. I know if I interview a candidate and they say “we” a lot, speak about the team, collective wins, that’s when you have a good one. No one wins on their own anymore — everything happens in a team.

What makes applicants stand out from their competitors?

LS: Especially now, where we only hire through video interviews, energy is more important than ever. Something that flows quite naturally in-person is just that bit harder through video. Showing drive, enthusiasm and passion is so vital. And not be afraid to show your style! When it comes to the CV, I must say it becomes less and less important. We have hired so many great talents that were not perfect on paper and vice versa.

What is the most important aspect of the role?

ML: Of course, living and breathing the brand is number one, but the other part is really considering that data. Where does our consumer come from? What are they interested in? What is their clickthrough rate? When we talk about sustainability, for example, how did they react to purpose?

Job in Focus: Lead Buyer Modern & Classic Womenswear

Interviewee: Farhan Qureshi, team lead buying womenswear at Zalando Lounge

What advice can you share for the interview process?

FQ: There are multiple stages at Zalando Lounge. There’s the CV screenings, then we would schedule a first telephone interview, asking questions from a cultural fit perspective and a more general top-line view. Next, it’s a video interview when we just discuss the CV and deep dive on experiences. Then, if we feel that the candidate is suitable, we would invite them to a final interview process consisting of multiple internal stakeholders within the Zalando family. For this stage they usually have to do a bit of pre-work — we would send them a case study to present, for instance. During the interview, they meet with the hiring manager, such as myself, and, most likely, the Team Lead or the Head of that area.

What makes applicants stand out from their competitors?

FQ: The easiest thing to say would be the aesthetic of a CV, but that’s something that is quite obvious; otherwise I think international experience is something that is a real nice added bonus. We are a very international company so that’s always something that draws my eye as a hiring manager. It is really important for candidates to make their career trajectory and growth path abundantly clear within the framework of a CV or cover letter. Whether it’s been at one company or if it’s been at different companies, just make your experience super clear for the reader.

What is the most important aspect of the role?

FQ: Speed of execution is absolutely key in this side of things because, at best, we’re competing with many other players in the fast-paced environment of fashion e-commerce. Being agile to react to the wider business scenario and take advantage of it is crucial. Internally, this role is led by stakeholder management, face-to-face conversations, and relationship building.
