Job Summary:

The Sr. Knitwear Designer will execute the design process from conception to final product. He/she will design a multi-faceted knitwear range with technical knowledge using yarns, gauges and stitches. This individual will have the ability to cull research that is season and brand appropriate to create products that reflect the conceptual creative direction and business strategy.


  • Research and identify competitive trends in the market to push for newness and relevant designs
  • Contribute towards trend report each season and use research to develop shapes/concepts for knitwear collection
  • Liaise with mills and collaborate with knitwear team to initiate pre-selection of new yarns
  • Collaborate with knitwear team to plan and develop key items according to yarn and delivery
  • Identify issues and offer appropriate solutions to styles at the development stage to ensure a high-level of execution
  • Generate style boards for showroom style- out
  • Work with Creative Director and Design team to create key looks
  • Sketch designs to create new pieces for the Collection
  • Hand- sketch all revised knitwear sketches for final line sheets
  • Work with factory in China to develop stitches, knitdowns and test bodies via Excel
  • Develop key novelty concepts and embellishments and layouts by hand and on Illustrator
  • Execute initial, detailed tech packs on excel to develop first prototypes, collaborating with technical/product developer
  • Generate appropriate knitdowns to be developed with protos
  • Attend fittings of prototypes with design team both in NY and China, initiating and documenting corrections to proportion and fit
  • Present line with knit/design team to Sales and Merchandising teams
  • Collaborate with cross functional-partners throughout the development process, partner with merchandising teams for awareness of past best-selling concepts and shapes to influence current design
  • Travel to China each season to collaborate with technical and knit development team and oversee development of collection styles

Desired Background:

  • Minimum Bachelor's degree (Fashion Design specializing in Knitwear or related field)
  • Master degree (a plus)


  • 10+ years of experience in sweater/knit design  
  • Women’s luxury apparel required


  • Extensive knowledge in knit construction, including understanding of both domestic and industrial knitting machines
  • Technical experience designing with yarns across all gauges
  • Knowledgeable working with mills in China and Italy
  • Proven ability to sketch, drape and communicate silhouette ideas clearly
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and knowledge of Adobe Programs (Photoshop and Illustrator)
  • Strong R+D skills and color sense
  • Possess high fashion aesthetics
  • Meticulous with attention to detail and organized with excellent follow up skills
  • Must be comprehensive in all responsibilities/accountabilities of the job
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced, creative environment
  • Capacity to manage expectations, set deadlines and follow up on projects with a strong sense of urgency
  • Must be a collaborative team member with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Willingness and ability to self-manage and take initiative
  • Willingness to travel to China up to 3 times a year
