Zalando is a highly digitized business which produces petabytes of raw data. This data treasure offers opportunities to enhance our business both in the analytical and the machine learning space. In order to leverage these opportunities, data needs to be captured, refined and accessible in a secure, compliant and cost-efficient way. To help with these processes, the Data Platform department provides opinionated first-in-class tools and infrastructure for storing, accessing, transforming, serving and querying data, as well as offering an integrated machine learning development environment. By providing one central data platform, we enable data engineers to focus on the business problems instead of data infrastructure, improving productivity. The product portfolio includes a data lake, data transformation, data pipeline orchestration, a fast-serving layer and a querying engine. For machine learning it provides a notebook, an orchestration engine and an environment to build, train and deploy models. In this role, you will be a key player in defining and implementing the technical solutions which are required to fulfill our company data strategy.

  • Build up, lead, manage, inspire, and grow multiple data infrastructure teams
  • Engage with product managers and other leaders across the company to deliver outstanding products to satisfy the needs of our internal customers
  • Implement our company-wide data strategy by defining solutions which fulfill our strategic and operational needs
  • Develop and execute a clear migration plan for the transition of our centralized business intelligence pipeline to a decentralized approach based on isolated transformation processes

  • Strong technical leadership experience; you bring at least 10 years of data engineering and 5 years of leadership experience to the table
  • Data and ML expertise; in-depth experience with large-scale cloud-based data and ML infrastructure as well as tooling landscape (e.g. Spark, Presto, Exadata, Exasol, Databricks, BigQuery, and SageMaker)
  • Customer focus; a deep understanding of the requirements of key data stakeholders like data scientists, data engineers or data analysts
  • Visionary and strategic mindset; you can define, develop and advocate a product vision and strategy, have a progressive approach and the ability to introduce and inspire change. You work through mechanisms, not meetings
  • Excellent communicator; the ability to inform, convince and persuade a range of stakeholders, also on executive level, in both verbal and written form
  • Business acumen; manages a cost center with a high cost footprint; has an eye for cost-efficiency as well as contract negotiation experience
