The Horologist at The RealReal supports the Fine Jewelry and Watch department through the development, application, and teaching of authentication and pricing methodology and standards, compiling and organizing research and training materials, and maintaining The RealReal merchandising standards through monitoring watch consignments - ensuring quality, productivity and consignor / customer experience.

You are a collaborator and researcher who identifies opportunities and strives for business success. You have deep industry knowledge of iconic watch brands, and experience with secondary market pricing principles and application. This role will report to the Fine Jewelry & Watch Director. Key partners include: Merchandising, Watchmakers, Fine Jewelry & Watch Production, Gemology, Consignor/Customer Service, Returns, Inbound/Outbound Operations teams, Luxury Consignment Offices.

What You Get To Do Every Day
  • Teach and apply complex concepts as part of building a knowledgeable and efficient Specialist production and Luxury Consignment Office teams and support inbound supply
  • Promote quality expectations and hold the team accountable, in partnership with Production management; ensure standards and adherence to SOPs through hands-on-training, routine assessments and audits 
  • Provide solutions in response to obstacles and identify opportunities for efficiencies
  • Develop standards and methodologies, implement and apply; define metrics and means of assessing accuracy, consistency and quality of performance, information sources and reference guides, and system information
  • Build product knowledge archive, maintaining historical and industry knowledge of brand, style, manufacturing, pricing and market trends; inform management of important activity and essential information, and update internal references
  • Support in-bound Production, Luxury Consignment Office and Consignor/Customer Service teams in watch authentication, pricing research and product description, and inquiry response; manage escalated inquiries
  • Contribute to copy and cataloging for notable, complex and/or high value product
  • Collaborate on or lead projects and research, as directed by management, including in-house training, educational and reference materials and SOPs
  • Ensure all laboratories are equipped with necessary and functioning tools, including performing regular maintenance and calibration
  • Represent the company and department at industry events and workshops, as needed 

What You Bring To The Role
  • 5+ years industry experience required; academic or professional research, sales and/or authentication experience preferred
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required. Concentration and/or advanced degree in art history and/or watchmaking preferred
  • CW21, SAWTA and WOSTEP diploma preferred
  • Advanced knowledge of watch history, design, manufacturing and secondary market; concentration in major European luxury brands, preferred
  • Advanced technical expertise, including brand, model, movement and material identification, secondary market pricing principles and estimation know-how and proficiency
  • Proven problem solving skills with a strong commitment to action
  • The capability to handle ambiguity and be flexible to changing needs and priorities
  • The ability to prioritize multiple time-sensitive tasks and/or escalate issues
  • The skills to work effectively and collaboratively in teams to meet shared goals and deadlines, and foster cross-functional partnerships
  • Demonstrated ability to self start, maximize productivity, and anticipate organizational needs
  • Attention to detail, strong organizational and communication skills, geared towards large groups
  • Proven technical writing skills
  • Solid analytical skills
  • French, German and/or Italian language skills, preferred
