Overview

The Business of Fashion is seeking an enthusiastic, self-starter to be their new Financial Controller. With your combination of technical knowledge, willingness to roll up your sleeves and continue the development of wider finance team members, you will assist the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) in taking the Finance function to the next level. Your focused attention to detail combined with an ability to step back to better advise on potential courses of action will be a key aspect in driving the profitable expansion of a market-leading scale-up media business.

What We Need You To Do

You will be the gatekeeper of all historical financial information and provide the platform on which key financial decisions will be made. You will ensure that the business complies with all tax, financial regulatory and shareholder information requirements.

Reporting to the CFO, you will manage the business as usual activities and workflow of the finance team, by being the first point of contact for both internal and external stakeholders. In being successful in this role, you will:

  • Manage the day-to-day workflow of the Finance team, including allocating task, workflow management and monitoring of the finance email inbox
  • Manage the month end process by overseeing external accountants in the UK, USA, and China. Review monthly management accounts and produce meaningful commentary for the leadership team
  • Prepare monthly investor reports for use by external stakeholders
  • Oversee the external payroll company in UK, US, China, and France and submit payroll for payment each month including being the key point of contact for pensions and benefits’ payments
  • Work closely with the People team to ensure smooth onboarding and offboarding of staff
  • Oversee accounts payable processes and ensure timely payments of invoices
  • Review and approve monthly payment run, ensuring the correct governance is followed
  • Manage monthly cash flow across multiple currencies, including dealing with currency traders
  • Answer ad-hoc queries regarding payroll, pensions, expenses
  • Manage local and international accounting advisors to assist with accounts preparation of foreign subsidiaries
  • Oversee preparation of VAT returns
  • Manage banking relationships and be key point of contact
  • Be key point of contact for insurance brokers and prepare annual insurance policy submissions to mitigate risks in a cost-effective way
  • Work with the CFO and other senior colleagues in the People, Legal and Finance team to create the right conditions for the wider BoF team to excel

Who You Are

You are a highly articulate Financial Controller with a strong technical background and an understanding of the environment in which scale-ups succeed. Demonstrable experience in subscription/SaaS businesses will be an advantage

You will have a keen attention to detail and know how to communicate with senior leadership, influencing their views on key trends, actionable tactics and priorities to grow the business profitably. Your dedication to getting the job done will be matched by your interest in appreciation of the “why?”. Outside of that, you will have the following skills that will help set you up for success:

  • Self-starter and enthusiastic
  • Take ownership of tasks, ensuring effective delegation to your team
  • Strong attention to detail combined with the ability to synthesise the detail into actionable advice for the wider BoF team
  • A track record line managing, coaching and developing a team 
  • Take enjoyment from the excitement and fluidity of working within an early-stage scale-up business
  • Articulate written and verbal communication
  • CIMA or ACA Qualified

Your deep understanding of the business will allow you to manage key business processes that will be relied upon by both financial and non-financial team members.

Your advice to the CFO and leadership influences the strategic direction of the business through the completeness of its analysis, the persuasiveness of its logic, and the recognition of how it fits with wider priorities.
