DeMellier – Handbag Designer

DeMellier is a fast-growing award-winning designer handbag brand based in London. In 2018 it was awarded the Emerging Talent Award Brand by British Luxury Association WALPOLE, recognising its commitment to innovation, craftsmanship and the highest standards of quality. DeMellier handbags have become a favourite among strong women all over the world, including celebrities such as Beyonce, Irina Shayk, Emily Blunt, Meghan Markle Duchess of Sussex, January Jones and Kristen Bell among others. 

In addition to its direct-to-consumer business, DeMellier is stocked in leading department stores such as Le Bon Marche, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Lane Crawford among others.

 

The Role

It’s an exciting role at the core of DeMellier that will allow the Designer to have a very important impact on the collections that are launched and produced, providing a great sense of ownership and achievement. It will also allow the Designer to learn about the different aspects of the company and be part of a very committed and enthusiastic multicultural team.

- Reports to DeMellier’s Creative Director, and is supported by the Design & Production Coordinator

-  Manages the design and product development of 4 seasonal collections a year, in addition to any special projects - from initial concept, sourcing and development stage, through to production sign-off (leather goods and custom hardware development)

-  Sets out the critical path for each collection/project and ensures the timeline is followed closely to deliver on time

-  Researches new trends and materials and prepares brainstorming sessions with the Creative Director

-  Creates collection plans and overviews, sketches, CAD renderings and technical specifications

-  Assesses all development prototypes and final samples, and resolves any product development or quality issues 

-  Works closely with agents, suppliers and the factory in Spain

-  Provides costing calculation for each new product

-  Orders raw materials for collection samples

-  Travels to Italy twice a year (when possible) to attend Lineapelle and possibly to the factory in Spain

-  Works with the Management team to understand customer buying trends

-  Works with the Marketing and Graphic Design teams to provide input on the seasonal linesheets to present to buyers

-  Works with the Production Manager and Coordinator to set up new products and raw materials in Zedonk

-  Works with the Customer Service team to answer any queries relating to design and quality

- Participates in the weekly office meetings (online or remotely) to provide updates on collection developments and share learnings across areas 

 

Skills & Experience

-  Bachelor Degree in Fashion or Design Arts

-  Previous experience in the same role and field

-  Confident user of Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator and Photoshop) and Microsoft Office (Excel)

-  Fluent in English, knowledge of Spanish is a plus

-  Effective design management, according to deadlines

-  Trend catcher, materials and details researcher

-  The highest level of attention to detail

- Great sense of ownership

- A team player
