POSITION SUMMARY STATEMENT 

The Senior Textile Designer will create designs for knitted cut & sew textiles utilizing in-house made and purchased assortment of yarns. Designer will combine innovative approach with a practical view of the end-products as usable garments. Designer will oversee the development of swatch developments to assure adherence to merchandising plan, cost /quality requirements and Design Calendar deadlines

Designs will be based on seasonal color story, merchandising plans and production knitting machine gauge assortment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Ability to be artistic, creative and able to work with cad based design programs (Shima, Stoll experience preferred, company will consider training candidates that have all other qualifications)
  • Ability to design based on seasonal color story, merchandising plan and knitting machine assortment
  • Designer must discuss, understand and interpret the needs, ideas and requirements of brand customer accurately
  • Ability to have an eye for color, texture and pattern and have meticulous attention to detail
  • Understand the properties of different materials (yarns) and the production processes of textiles (knitting machine types, gauges)
  • Have knowledge of the market and strong vision and ability to predict new trends.
  • Liaise with in-house Merchandising & Creative teams, interpreting their ideas and needs accurately
  • Liaise with Yarn R&D /Design purchasing group and technical staff (programmers, knitters) as well as design colleagues considering how the textile will be used, and what properties it needs
  • Ability to provide specific design direction for programmer team, yarn R&D, knitting team to create computer programs and actual knit swatches for Merchandising /Creative Design meetings
  • Assess how the textile will be used and assess which properties it needs, before producing design ideas and/or sample swatch for presentation to Merchandising/Creative teams
  • Research and test the properties of materials used in specialist and industrial textiles (printing, washing, felting, circular knitting /flat- bed knitting)
  • Ability to experiment with color, texture, and unique knitting applications (this may include printing on knit using SIP Transfer print or screen printing techniques)
  • Undertake research for ideas and inspiration
  • Check and approve samples of completed design items
  • Work to specific deadlines, volume requirements, and within a budget
  • Stay relevant with new fashions, trends, and design/production techniques
  • Attend textile trade shows as needed

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

  • 5 – 10 years of textile or fabric design experience
  • Be skilled in design and technology subjects
  • Strongly fluent with fashion, textiles, and design
  • Proficiency and passion for working with various styles and techniques
  • Thrive and proven success in team based environments
  • Strong comprehension of commercial aspect /requirements of product development
  • Maintain high level of creative output
  • College Degree in fashion related field, or equivalent certification, training or work experience
  • Computer proficiency and specific software requirements
