DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Strategic Function

  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of best practice in design management policies, processes and procedures to aid and improve operational performance
  • Set and communicate departmental objectives/KPIs, review and assess ongoing performance of direct reports
  • Develop, manage and account for the departmental budget
  • Manage the Design Team resources and deploy them as required to ensure timely completion of tasks 

General Tasks Management

  • Lead the team to create production capabilities for design and in new product development projects
  • Manage design projects, costs and changes and provide regular progress updates on budgetary information to management
  • Work closely with the Director of Merchandising and the Designer to create the design calendar and be responsible for driving it’s execution with all relevant teams
  • Liaise closely with all departments to fully understand design requirements, respond to Requests for Quotation (RFQs) from the Sales team and create initial feasibility studies
  • Conceptualize new designs and design revisions and create detailed costed design blueprints (BOM)
  • Provide support to the Production Team to improve production lead times and improve reliability performance to reduce or eliminate product returns
  • Drive forward product development, innovation and ‘think outside the box’ to generate engineering/design advantages for customers, thinking creatively to develop new/improved solutions as well as update existing product designs for SOKO or other customers
  • Identify and implement design improvements (functionality, cost, design for manufacture)
  • Report on achievement of targets and identify any actions required
  • Motivate and coach the team to operational success
  • Work collaboratively across the business, negotiate and engage with key stakeholders to facilitate delivery and compliance with the design strategy.

People Management

  • Lead the Design Team in new product development projects
  • Manage the design and development team to produce a range of concept design schemes for new products as well as updating existing product designs for SOKO or other customers
  • Monitor capacity, manage team members’ performance and ensure appropriate systems are maintained
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance
  • Support the Sales and Business Development team with introductions for sales and partnership opportunity generation.

REQUIREMENTS

  • A bachelor’s degree in graphic design, visual arts or related field with certification in project management
  • At least 5 years’ experience working in the jewelry industry with at least 3 of those being in a management role
  • Experience in Rhino and CAD/CAM
  • Adept in Adobe suites especially Illustrator and photoshop
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent presentation and analytical skills
  • Strong negotiation and conflict management skills
