The Digital Experience organization builds the actual customer experience of the Zalando Fashion Store largely driven by personalized content. We develop Machine Learning products that automatically tailor the digital content in Zalando's apps for each of our 30+ million customers. Our real-time recommendation and auction systems are blending content from internal offers with content from our fashion partners to create an engaging and inspirational customer experience. Our algorithmic systems are designed to optimize for the whole customer lifetime rather than an immediate interaction.

As a Senior Principal Applied Scientist, you are not only advancing the machine learning algorithms that personalize the content selection in the Zalando applications but also work and advance on the economic areas of unified auctions that ensure a fair and healthy marketplace and long-term lift estimation. You are the go-to person for the whole organization when it comes to algorithm research, modelling and experimentation as well as translating successful research results in software products and services. You will employ a broad range of leadership mechanisms to influence applied science in algorithmic content selection at Zalando.

  • Research challenging problems, such as improving the prediction of customer actions and real-time recommender systems, long-term lift estimation and unified auction design
  • Design and implement machine learning and allocation solutions and jointly deliver software solutions that improve the way our customers experience Fashion
  • Build products in collaboration with Product Managers, Software Engineers, Designers and Applied Scientists
  • Mentor Applied Scientists throughout the whole organization
  • Initiate impactful projects and create innovative technical concepts to solve challenging problems
  • Reinvent and change the way on-site content creation and selection is done at Zalando by driving the data and AI driven future

  • Create long term research roadmaps beyond isolated product boundaries
  • Raises best practices in scientific methods and applying science in all teams at the Helsinki tech hub and across Zalando


  • PhD (or comparative experience) in Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics or other similar quantitative fields
  • Deep understanding of statistics, machine learning, and econometrics applied in a commercial context as well as knowledge of best practices in productionalizing machine learning systems
  • Experience with online learning, click-through-rate prediction, whole-page recommendation, contextual bandits, long-term lift estimation, causality or reinforcement learning is a plus.
  • Knowledge of big data technologies like Spark / Flink is an advantage, as well as experience with Cloud Computing frameworks (e.g., AWS)
  • Authority in your research area with an extensive track record advancing the research beyond the state of the art
