Reports To: Senior Developer Advocate Manager

Works With:
  • Works with the product and engineering teams of its assigned area of responsibility

  • Works with fellow developer advocates

Role Overview

As a Senior Developer Advocate, you ensure that Shopify builds the most developer-friendly commerce platform in the world. We expect you to bring or develop a long-term industry vision in your area of responsibility and work with our product and engineering teams to shape the future of the platform. To do so, you will be the first to try things out, to build proofs of concept and the first to figure out where things break. You will need to build solid relationships with our platform's internal and external users and understand their challenges to represent them at every step of our platform's development: you will act as the voice of developers. You will also understand the landscape of competing tools and products developers could choose as alternatives to Shopify and ensure we stay ahead. Finally, you will invest some of your time building and supporting developer tools, client libraries or anything else that you think could improve the developer experience in your area of expertise.

Area of Focus

This role specifically focused on our Core-Build product area. You will be in charge of many developer experiences, including applications that heavily rely on our App Bridge, Argo and event synchronization technologies. Furthermore, over the next few years, we will release a ton of new integration points that will give our partners new powerful ways to add value to millions of Shopify merchants. Your role will be to make sure those technologies are developer-friendly, and that partners are heard at every point of the development lifecycle. This is a unique opportunity to influence the future of commerce and positively impact the lives of developers, merchants, and shoppers around the world.

*This is not a traditional "Developer Advocate" role as this person will be expected to advocate for our internal Shopifolk regarding systems, implementations and processes.

Responsibilities and Duties:
  • Be the voice of the developer.
  • Define and be responsible for the expected quality standards of our developer experience; drive its adoption among product and engineering teams.
  • Build proof of concepts, and exercise new developer products and APIs.
  • Working with your peers in the developer advocacy craft, provide a wider context to your assigned product area to ensure we ship a cohesive platform.
  • Build a deep understanding of different product verticals to become a domain expert by working with internal product teams and external partners
  • Understand, measure and mitigate the impact on new changes our developer ecosystem
  • Review documentation updates, new tutorials and other public-facing content to make sure it is technically accurate and aligns with the long term vision of our platform.

Qualifications:
  • Technical experience in one of our verticals (ie: Shipping, Payments, Online Stores, Checkout, Logistics)
  • Excellent communication skills (experience in public speaking and/or live streaming a plus)
  • University degree in computer science, related field or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in building apps on web platforms (experience building a Shopify app a plus)
  • Good at managing complex dependencies and competing priorities

We know that applying to a new role takes a lot of work and we truly value your time. We're looking forward to hearing from you! Please address your application to Amber.

Closing date: April 21, 2021 at 5:00 pm EST. Candidates proceeding to the first stage of interviewing can expect to hear back by April 26, 2021
