Shopify has a large and growing developer ecosystem building SaaS products that help power our 1.7M+ merchants worldwide. We have over 6000+ apps in our App Store and thousands of developers that help customize merchant stores, all committed to creating value for our merchants. We are constantly launching new developer tools and products to help developers innovate on Shopify and meet diverse merchant needs. As our Developer Community and Relations lead, you will be the connective tissue between Shopify and our developer community. You'll be responsible for engaging developers all over the world. You'll make it simple for our developer community to understand the opportunity of building on Shopify and bring awareness to new products and features of the platform. You will directly communicate with our developer community across channels and forums (both online and offline), to help them understand technical features of the platform, answer questions, collect feedback, and share insights back with our product and commercial teams.

You have a deep understanding of the developer audience and speak their language. You are passionate about technical communities and building relationships, and understand how to build a thriving community built on trust. You are a strong communicator and bring energy to everything you do. You work well across all disciplines and can connect the dots for your audience working across Product, Engineering, Marketing, Partnerships and Ops.

As a leader, you care about fostering a creative and collaborative culture. Alongside your team, you'll be defining, implementing and measuring the success of the different community relations functions you build. You love to experiment and try new things, are deeply curious and will roll up your sleeves to get shit done.

Role responsibilities:
  • Responsible for building and managing our developer community both online and offline
  • Help developers understand the opportunity of building on Shopify: develop multi-channel strategies to produce compelling educational content, lead engaging workshops and advocate for the benefits of building on Shopify
  • Educate developers on how to use Shopify developer tools (APIs, extensions, etc.) and respond to real time questions and feedback on key channels
  • Work with Product Managers, UX and Engineering to understand new features and educate the developer audience on what's coming
  • Understand developer community needs and provide feedback to R&D and Commercial teams.
  • Lead and grow a team of community managers and developer evangelists.
  • Recruit and engage content contributors internally and externally
  • Keep your finger on the pulse of community engagement trends and establish rituals to report and share out progress, what's working and what isn't
  • Manage and oversee community responses and engagement
  • Drive engagement across all channels and forums


  • 7+ years of experience in developer relations or advocacy, growing technical communities.
  • You are an active member of the developer community and have proven experience in leading and executing this function.
  • You have the technical depth and understanding to work directly with product,eng, and UX teams building developer products to give frontline feedback that makes Shopify's developer tools and products better.
  • Strong communication skills, comfortable with public speaking both in person and virtual.
  • The ability to thrive in chaos, resolve ambiguity and think quickly on your feet
  • Experience working with and leading a cross-functional team
  • Experience using data and analytics to measure the impact of your function
  • True passion for building world-class technical communities
