Help us shape the future of Fashion Search as AI / Search Principal in Zalando’s Search department. This is a unique opportunity to use your experience and knowledge in Search & Ranking to bring ideas in production that would stay theory in most companies. You will be working with a diverse team of backend engineers and data scientists using IR & AI technologies to improve Zalando’s internal fashion Search engine operating on one of Europe’s largest Elasticsearch Cluster on kubernetes, serving more than 25 million Zalando customers in 17 countries, speaking 12 different languages. As part of a highly ambitious leadership team, you will help to achieve our mission to become Europe’s starting point for Fashion Search.

WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED
  • Working on interesting challenges in search (understanding human language and intent, visibility bias, multiobjective ranking) as well as in fashion where influences like trends, fit or personal taste matter
  • Work across teams to create a state-of-the art science stack that enables the product strategy and being an evangelist of architecture principles
  • By following the latest developments in research & industry you will advise strategy and big-bet investments
  • Mentoring and coaching of data-scientists and research engineers to support them executing on complex ML and AI topics
  • Foster collaboration and shared data infrastructure with teams outside Search to create synergies
  • By representing Search and Zalando at conferences and meetups you attract talented data scientists and research engineers

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
  • Extensive experience as a principal contributor within Search, Ranking and Machine Learning / AI, having worked in a defining role on large scale projects
  • Track-record in inventing and applying novel research methods in the industry
  • Excellent communication skills in English with a proven ability to document complex domains and solution concepts in a concise and comprehensive way
  • A team player and good communicator that enables others rather than becoming a bottleneck.
  • A PhD with a focus on information retrieval or machine learning is a plus
