About the Role:

The Capital Operations team at Shopify is responsible for the day-to-day operations of Shopify Capital. Our primary responsibilities include: underwriting and approving daily incoming applications, merchant-level credit analysis, daily disbursement of funds, and special projects to scale the platform for continued long-run growth.

As our team continues to grow, we are looking to add an Analyst and Senior Analyst to support the continued global expansion of Shopify Capital; a merchant capital solutions business that surpassed the $2 billion milestone. We work closely with our immediate colleagues on the Treasury team for day-to-day operational needs, including daily fundings to our merchants. We also partner with our colleagues across the organization, including Finance, Legal, Recovery, Data Science, and Product. Naturally, as Shopify continues to grow, this role's responsibilities will grow with it.

  • Underwriting and approving merchant financing applications through credit analysis, including data from Shopify's platform and external financial statement analysis
  • Being the Capital Operations representative to work with our sales team on pricing negotiations and developing a framework to evaluate credit risk on large loan financings.
  • Leading cross functional projects to identify and address credit risk and improve operational efficiencies
  • Acting as a trusted underwriter of the Capital Operations team regarding financing approvals, designing processes to increase efficiency, and further enhancing our credit analysis framework for decisioning
  • Liaising with external parties and effectively communicating portfolio performance and operations to the team


  • Extensive experience in credit underwriting at a traditional bank,alternative lender and / or operations
  • Strong financial acumen, including experience with financial statement analysis
  • Analytical mindset with strong attention to detail
  • Ability to work under pressure and adhere to tight deadlines
  • A deep curiosity and a willingness to break free from the status quo

Bonus Experience and Qualifications:
  • Experience with SQL/Python
  • Experience with People Leadership
  • Advanced degrees or credentials (e.g., MBA, CFA)
