Job Details

We're looking for a Community Manager to join our Data Science & Engineering programs team. You'll work under the team's brand and communication arm, responsible for building the Shopify Data brand both externally and internally. In this role, you'll spearhead growing our global presence within key technical communities. You'll do this by coordinating strategic events, sponsorships, and partnerships that you'll source with guidance from our internal stakeholders, as well as identifying and engaging with our online communities.

We're looking for someone with deep knowledge and experience engaging with technical communities to achieve results. You will work closely with data scientists, data engineers, program managers, and marketers in your day-to-day. To be successful in this role, you must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, being goal-oriented, thinking critically, managing multiple projects, and building relationships. You work well under pressure, understand what motivates data scientists and engineers, and can both set and deliver on hard deadlines while simultaneously thriving in a changing environment. You are organized, detail-oriented, and are comfortable pushing the status quo.

Responsibilities:
  • Help identify key communities for Shopify Data to be involved in
  • Plan, implement, and optimize our outreach strategy, increasing Shopify Data's presence in key technical communities
  • Manage and maintain relationships with community partners
  • Source, pitch, and deliver high impact events, conferences, and sponsorships
  • Create opportunities for Shopify data scientists and engineers to participate in our outreach activities
  • Create and manage an intake process and strategy for inbound community-based opportunities
  • Create and maintain a community and sponsorship database for our ongoing initiatives
  • Monitor and report the impact of outreach initiatives
  • Identify opportunities to better engage and support our technical communities through long term partnerships
  • Collaborate with internal teams to improve technical community engagement overall and raise awareness of our partners internally and externally


Qualifications

Requirements for the role:
  • Prior experience identifying, managing, and maintaining multiple community partnerships and programs
  • Exceptional written communication skills
  • Demonstrated understanding of data communities and the motivations of a technical audience
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and deliver on deadlines to ensure projects are delivered on time
  • Experience collaborating with technical teams (such as data scientists, engineers, developers, etc.), event organizers and marketing teams
  • A keen eye for detail and a strong desire for efficiency
  • A self-starter who takes initiative and is excited to problem-solve
  • Proven experience in building strong relationships with audiences and stakeholders at multiple levels in a company setting
  • Proven ability to thrive on change

Bonus experience
  • Familiarity with the data science and engineering domain
  • Experience building successful partnerships from the ground up
  • Experience managing community-wide conferences
  • Experience managing and growing a developer community
