As Engineering Program Managers, our mandate is to ensure that the fundamental engineering qualities of our platform, such as speed, scalability, resiliency, etc, meet and continuously improve on the high standards we set for them, as we continue to grow and scale.

You'll work horizontally across all product areas in Shopify core platform and beyond, and have the autonomy to identify, prioritize, and solve speed and scale problems at Shopify using innovative approaches. You'll partner with engineering leads, and collaborate closely with product managers and leadership teams to drive your programs forward. Resourcefulness is key - you'll need to quickly gather context on our infrastructure, systems, software and safeguards to be able to have an impact.

This role gives you the opportunity to:
  • Connect the dots between projects, programs and people at Shopify - making sure engineering quality principles are being integrated in our engineering work
  • Systematize measurement of our engineering quality themes (performance/scalability), and identify and prioritize opportunities to improve
  • Realize engineering improvements by building and driving programs and initiatives, which typically span across multiple teams, product areas, and hundreds of developers
  • Build reflection and recognition into the programs, celebrating wins and evangelizing learnings. Foster a lasting appreciation for engineering excellence in our culture


You should have experience with*:
  • Program management, building and running large, complex, multi-disciplinary engineering programs
  • Software development or experience working with or leading engineering teams
  • Technical understanding of how systems connect with each other
  • Translating technical jargon and complicated concepts into something simple, accurate and understandable
  • Identifying areas of performance or scale concern and assessing risk or opportunities - while adapting to rapid change
  • Working cross-functionally in large organizations to solve complex problems, treat large amounts of information, and easily build and maintain an influential network within organizations
  • An in-depth understanding of, or interest in, performance and/or scale concerns of large scale systems and platforms
