About the Role

As a member of the Grazia USA editorial team, the Photography Director will support the Editor In Chief to ideate concepts for all photo shoots and ensure all visuals are in line with the magazine’s aesthetic. They will hire photographers, directors and stylists for all photo shoots and ensure that each selected artist is in line with the magazine’s vision and ethos. The Photography Director will also manage and allocate budgets for all photo shoots, ensuring that costs are streamlined and appropriate across all vendors.

Outcomes

The Photography Director will be responsible for achieving the following outcomes within the first year:

Basics & Cultivation of Accounts

  • Within 1 month of hire: Successfully complete formal onboarding program.
  • Within 3 months of hire: Demonstrate ability to ideate concepts for photo shoots
  • Within 6-9 months of hire: Demonstrate ability to manage multiple photo shoots autonomously and utilize relationships within the fashion industry to strengthen Grazia’s editorial ethos and POV
  • Within 1 year of hire: Demonstrate exceptional organizational ability and taste level and efficient management processes

Responsibilities

The ultimateaim of the Photography Director is to achieve the outcomes listed above. In order to achieve those outcomes, we imagine that the Photography Director will spend their time in the following ways:

Activation and Delivery

  • Maintain keen awareness of photographers, directors, stylists, hair and makeup artists, etc in the fashion industry to keep the magazine on the cutting edge of what is new, interesting, and exciting
  • Communicate extensively in advance of all shoots with photographers, directors, and stylists to ensure that everyone is on the same page regarding the magazine’s aesthetic goals
  • Create mood boards for photographers and directors for concept clarity
  • Be on set for photo shoots, ensuring that the production runs smoothly and all aspects of the photo shoot is accounted for and covered
  • Hire hair, makeup, manicure, production, locations, studios, catering, etc for all photo shoots and video shoots
  • Book models for photo shoots
  • Manage post-production and provide retouching notes to photographers and ensure that post-production is done in a way that maintains the aesthetic values of the magazine
  • Manage contracts with all photographers and directors, liaising between legal and photographers’ representatives
  • Liaise between vendors and magazine accountants when advances, COIs, credit card payments, etc are required in advance of a photo or video shoot
  • Liaise with talent managers to ensure that talent has all necessary information for photo and video shoots
  • Ensure that all hired vendors are aware of rates, budgets, and ensure that all costs are accounted for
  • Maintain tracking actuals for all photo and video shoot budgets
  • Collect and process invoices for all photo and video shoots

Qualifications

  • A minimum of two years of relevant work experience as a photo editor or director
  • Photography media industry knowledge and a passion for visuals
  • Has a proven track record of exceptional time management – effectively plans long-term and big picture projects, while maintaining day-to-day effectiveness. 
  • Has a track-record of meeting (or surpassing) ambitious goals in a fast-paced, competitive environment over a sustained period of time.
  • Possesses exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Takes a collaborative approach to their work; understands the limitations of their own perspective and works hard to understand the interests/perspectives of others.
  • Team player.
