Job Details

The RnD Programs team empowers Shopify team members with the technical skills to make commerce better for everyone. We do this, in part, through the delivery of world-class technical learning programs for engineers, data scientists, user experience designers and product managers who power our RnD teams, as well as the broader Shopify staff of over 7,000+ employees across the globe.

We are looking for someone to join us as a Learning Designer. In this role, you will be responsible for designing high quality learning content -- including instructor-led training materials, eLearning modules, and blended learning curriculum -- that powers our programs and creates real impact for learners. We are seeking someone who is comfortable working with highly technical subject-matter experts and is also fluent in best practices for instructional design for adult learners in a corporate setting.

You'll be charged with managing the end-to-end production of instructional design projects including scoping, storyboarding and drafting, production and publishing. Depending on the size of the project, you may be called on to manage the work teams of other subject-matter experts and contributors including copywriters, graphic designers, and video production teams. For smaller projects, you might work on your own. At all times, you'll be asked to apply best practices for adult learning design to your work and pairing with other Learning Designers to ensure all of our learning content meets our high standards for quality and learner engagement.

If you are passionate about great learning design for technical audiences, let's talk! We would love for you to join us to push boundaries as we define the future of technical learning at one of the world's fastest growing tech companies.

Responsibilities:
  • Designing and building best practice technical training content for use in instructor-led training, eLearning and blended learning experiences.
  • Contributing great content to our technical learning catalog and working to define and maintain standards for quality.
  • Assessing business and learner needs and defining learning objectives for new courses and workshops.
  • Accurately scoping project timelines and budgets. Managing content production timelines and the contributions of subject-matter experts, writers, graphic designers and video producers as needed.
  • Participating in peer review and pairing with other learning designers to support continuous improvement and professional growth.

Qualifications

  • At least two years experience as an instructional or learning designer in a corporate or adult learning setting, with demonstrated ability to deliver top-notch content that engages participants and moves the needle on learning growth.
  • Experience working with highly technical subject-matter experts.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively manage end-to-end learning content production from needs assessment through to publication and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with best practices for learning content design, delivery and management across instructor-led training, eLearning and blended learning models.
  • Experience and comfort in working cross-functionally to produce learning content, partnering with different teams and individual contributors within a large corporate setting to get things done.
  • Demonstrated ability to build and manage teams of contributors including subject-matter experts, writers, designers, producers etc.
  • The ability to thrive in an environment where experimentation is encouraged and you are confident in creating, executing and championing those experiments.
  • Exceptional written communication skills with experience adapting tone and voice to align with corporate brand guidelines.

Bonus Experience:
  • Experience in software development, data science, product management and/or UX, or in adjacent roles.
  • Passion for finding accessible, fun and creative ways to teach technical topics to audiences ranging in experience from beginner to advanced.

Application Timeline:

We know that applying to a new role takes time, and we really appreciate your submissions! We're looking forward to learning more about you. The application window will remain open through Friday December 17th 2021.
