We are a team of applied scientists and engineers aiming to provide a flawless shopping experience by making the right sizes always available for our customers, and to achieve unit economics by smart stock management. As the Senior Applied Scientist in the Retail Data Products Team, you'll be working with other Data Scientists and stakeholders to build the next-gen ML models that help Zalando place the right orders for the right articles at the right time.

WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED
  • Actively contribute to the team roadmap, and work closely with product managers and engineers to identify areas of opportunity and resource requirements to deliver impactful products
  • Design and present key metrics that drive business insights. Communicate verbally and in writing to stakeholders with various levels of technical knowledge, educating them about our systems, and enabling them to interact with our data/model products
  • Be the owner of the whole development cycle of algorithms - from opportunity discovery to production. Iteratively improve models and explore the art of possibility (e.g. new data sources, new ways of structuring the problem)
  • Be the technical champion in the team and mentor junior team members
  • Fostering an inclusive and diverse team environment

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
  • Master degree or above (PhD) in machine learning, quantitative economics, statistics, mathematics, physics, operation research or a related quantitative discipline.
  • At least 4 years of industry experience (2 years with PhD degree) in developing e2e ML solutions (from conceptualisation to prototype).
  • Strong programming skills. Experience in collaborating with engineers to convert prototypes into production model pipelines. Experience using distributed computing frameworks such as Spark to leverage large datasets in order to drive business outcomes.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a curious and self-starter mindset. Ability to unblock yourself, but also proactively request support when needed to remove roadblocks
  • Experience in Promoting inclusive cultural practices

About the team:

As the In-Season Management and Data Products team, we support this vision by ensuring relevant assortment is available to our customers and providing a great shopping experience. We want to achieve high product availability to minimize lost sales while controlling for overstock/underperformance to increase profitability.
