Job Details

The Employee Experience team connects Shopify employees (known as Shopifolk) to our mission, to their work, and to each other by providing a wide variety of programs, projects, and services. These include, but are not limited to: Bursting (gathering IRL for multi-day touchpoints), Ports (physical spaces to burst in), the Digital Experience including home setups, Broadcast and Technical Infrastructure, Physical Security, Employee Travel, Health and Safety, and Events.

We're looking for an experienced Team Operations Lead to drive key initiatives and communicate across Employee Experience's diverse and complex set of programs and projects. The Team Operations Lead will design simple and scalable systems that empower the team to execute on the highest leverage activities. This person can look at a problem from 10,000 feet to see the bigger picture, and also has the capacity to zoom in on specific pieces of work. They are experts in program management, can influence at all levels of leadership, are systems thinkers, and are excellent communicators. They will overarchingly lead all administrative functions for the team.

To be successful in this role, you'll bring exceptional operational acumen, excellent communication, and advisory skills. TL;DR: You know how to build and run a well-oiled machine.

You will be responsible to:
  • Work directly with the VP of Employee Experience and Director of Team Strategy + Planning on key initiatives, both as an individual contributor (e.g. developing executive summaries and presentations) and as a leader (e.g. wrangling different players to align on a common narrative and hitting key deadlines).
  • Keep the Employee Experience leadership team and other key stakeholders informed on various programming and efforts. Providing visibility into what teams are working on, timelines, and risks. Partnering closely with Internal Comms to deliver on this.
  • Partner with the Director of Team Strategy + Planning to deliver on the strategy for team touchpoints, such as Bursts, homesites, meeting cadence, and cultural and team cohesion programming.
  • Establish team rituals and build a sense of community to increase team engagement.
  • Bridge any gaps between Employee Experience and key external groups including the Office of the COO, Talent, and Finance (i.e. coordinating with peers on those teams to understand key priorities and projects, and aligning relevant timelines and goals).
  • Lead all administrative and operational functions for the team.
  • Actively work on operational processes to ensure the Employee Experience leadership team is informed and organized.
  • Provide additional bandwidth to the Director of Team Strategy + Planning, which may include attending meetings and making decisions on their behalf.
  • Lead, support, and develop a small but mighty team of Team Ops support staff.

Qualifications

Here's what we are looking for:
  • Operational chops: you understand how to run projects, how to see through metrics, and have a sixth sense for what is right vs what is broken, and you know what data matters to who and why.
  • A proven track record growing and scaling a global, cross-functional team
  • You're organized, skilled at asking tough questions, and communicating clearly. You're not shy to point out areas that need improvement.
  • You can roll up your sleeves and get shit done, including taking on occasional projects.
  • Able to zoom in and zoom out -- effectively balancing strategic thinking and long-term vision, with a high attention to practicality and team bandwidth.
  • You've built empathy and high-trust relationships across teams. You are key to team culture.
  • A natural talent for communication and driving behavior via indirect leadership.
  • Discretion. You will be exposed to the breadth of Shopify, often within confidential settings.
  • Great interpersonal skills, with noteworthy success building relationships across all levels.
  • Proven ability and desire to coach and develop key team members.

It'd be great if you also had:
  • Design skills. You can transform a collection of notes into a killer deck.
  • Comms skills. You understand how to build narratives for executives and know how to communicate complex topics in a succinct way.
  • Program / Project Management skills. You stay organized and can move key initiatives forward.
