Last year, Shopify mobilized a new team called Product Acceleration -- the new home to our Corporate Development work. Our goal is to accelerate Shopify's mission to make commerce better for everyone through strategic acquisitions,investments and partnerships. This group lives within Shopify's Product organization and tightly aligns its priorities with R&D leadership. We're taking a product-first lens with our approach to acquisitions, investments and partnerships. To tackle this, we're designing our multidisciplinary team with folks who bring experience in product, technology, talent, and deal making.

This is where you come in. We're looking to add a Corporate Development Lead who has experience leading M&A and/or investment deals from first founder conversations through to close, all while creating exceptional founder experiences. Our ideal candidate is great at identifying, evaluating, and selecting the best opportunities, and most importantly, running high quality deal execution.

Working alongside Shopify's Acceleration Leadership team (our "GPs"), the Corporate Development Lead is responsible for accelerating Shopify's inorganic growth through acquisitions and strategic partnerships. We're looking for someone who is flexible and creative, has product sense, deal sense, and a sense of humor. Someone who loves doing deals - but only the right deals, at the right time. Someone who wants to help build Shopify into a 100 year company with us.

You'll be working on things like:
  • Sourcing and assessing deals while layering on diversity best practices in your work
  • Building and nurturing lasting founder relationships
  • Driving deals from lead generation → LOI → due diligence → close → integration
  • Building trust with product teams and leaders, and leading projects and people through influence
  • Using creativity to help accelerate our product roadmap through strategic acquisitions
  • Building context for transactions at Shopify through deep understanding of Shopify's product roadmap
  • Performing financial analysis, modeling, and valuation to support business cases and inform deal structures/negotiations


Qualifications

  • Experience leading M&A and/or investment transactions from ideation, to due diligence, to close/integration
  • Experience in the tech industry - you've worked at a high growth internet, ecommerce, platform and/or cloud company, or relevant leading VC or investment firm with a tech specialization
  • Experience and comfort working with product and technical teams, rooted in a genuine interest and passion for great product and technology
  • Involvement with investment process design and execution, and project management, as it pertains to M&A or investing
  • Financial and legal acumen; you have a strong understanding of financial statements, financial models, and deal documents (investment and M&A)
  • Ability to build trust quickly with stakeholders at all levels of leadership; you're adept at stakeholder management, delegation, and strategic communications
  • Expert negotiation skills - you have a track record of fair negotiations that are good for all sides - this isn't about ‘winning' all negotiations
  • Experience getting creative with deal making and influencing stakeholders to come to competitive and fair resolutions quickly
  • Excellent research skills
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills, especially in remote/digital settings

Bonus experience:
  • Experience in-house in corporate development, or venture capital/private equity
  • Experience in all facets of strategic transactions for companies, preferably at a fast moving technology-focused organization
  • Experience working in a digital work environment/remotely from your team
  • Experience as a product manager, engineer, or other related technical work experience
  • The ability to work across teams to make a great deal happen, quickly
  • Knowledge of Shopify's product suite and the potential opportunities around it
  • Experience with different size/scale of deals
