About the Role

Reporting to the Vice President, Tax and Risk Management, the Senior Director, Tax Planning, Research and Audits will lead activities related to federal and state tax credits, employee benefits, executive compensation, domestic legal entity structuring, federal and state tax controversies, special projects and legislation, working closely with peer groups responsible for tax accounting, reporting, and international tax planning.

This role is based out of the San Francisco office and requires you to be in the office on an occasional basis for critical in-person meetings and/or job duties that cannot be performed remotely. What You'll Do

  • Lead team in developing programs to claim and support WOTC, R&D and other tax credits
  • Solve issues for Tax Compliance and Tax Accounting Teams
  • Partner with and advise groups responsible for the 401(k) plan, deferred compensation, plan, cafeteria plan benefits, employee discounts, and fringe benefits. Review of all Form 5500 annual filings
  • Work with Director of Tax Planning to resolve program issues involving Gap Foundation. Partner with the sustainability group on major initiatives such as the US AID program
  • Advise Tax Department and business partners regarding tax consequences of transactions involving specific legal entities and recommend most efficient alternatives. Simplify structure where feasible. Work with transfer pricing team to maintain efficient and defensible intercompany compensation arrangements.
  • Work with Legal, Corporate Controller's Group, and Compensation to handle issues regarding (1) Gap, Inc. BOD reporting, (2) compensation, (3) deferred compensation, and (4) tax questions raised by BOD members.
  • Identify and investigate opportunities for reducing federal and state income taxes. Partner with Tax Accounting and International Tax groups as appropriate.
  • Defend Company's federal and State tax filing positions with minimum possible financial statement and cash flow impact and develop the necessary support for positions taken
  • Manage all federal and state income tax audits
  • Partner with other teams at Gap to meet the needs of the business, including FP&A, Corporate Controller's Group, and Treasury as well as other groups within the Tax Department
  • Analyze proposed federal and state legislation and partner with Government Affairs and industry groups to advocate for the Company's positions
  • Support Strategy and Growth Office initiatives including new business initiatives and M&A

Who You Are

  • Bachelor's degree, with CPA and/or Law degree
  • Seasoned tax professional experience in public accounting, law firm and/or a multinational corporate tax department
  • Extensive experience leading tax teams at a large global public company
  • Advanced Federal tax technical expertise, particularly in the areas of research and planning and audit controversy
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with ability to message effectively to senior management and non-tax professionals
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to collaborate, develop relationships and partner effectively across the organization
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to manage multiple simultaneous projects and maintain high level of attention to detail
