Content and Advertising economics is working on creating great customer experiences with advertising. We do so by building a fair and explainable marketplace, optimizing long-term value for customers and brands. We are running millions of ad auctions per day for each of our 45+ million customers and are building innovative, scalable and value-creating products on sound scientific foundations.Our real-time auction systems are blending content from best organic candidates with content from our fashion partners to create an engaging and economically optimized customer experience. Our algorithmic systems are designed to optimize for the whole customer lifetime rather than immediate interactions.

As a Data Science Manager, you will lead a team of Software and Data engineers and constantly collaborate with Data Scientists and Data Analysts to develop and deploy scalable auction, optimization and prediction algorithms. Our research problems are at the intersection of Optimization, Econometrics, Causal Inference, Auction theory and Machine Learning. You will provide a clear vision and strategy for Data Science engineering for your team. Your contributions are expected to help shape Zalando's overall Data Science community, consisting of more than 150 scientific experts.

WHERE YOUR EXPERTISE IS NEEDED
  • Develop and execute mid- & long-term vision and architectural direction to create highly scalable solutions for our ad and content platform, leveraging insights in Optimization, ML and Econometrics..
  • Build customer-centric products in collaboration with Product Managers, Software Engineers, Applied Scientists and Designers to optimize and quantify the impact of algorithmic and human decisions at scale.
  • Lead solution design and development to challenging problems, such as improving the prediction of customer actions and real-time recommender systems, long-term lift estimation and unified auction design.
  • Attract, onboard, develop and retain diverse talent to your team and transform the landscape of Zalando's Visibility Marketplace. Also, drive and build healthy inclusive teams promoting diversity.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
  • A solid background (MSc, PhD or comparative experience) in a quantitative scientific discipline with a strong understanding of statistics, machine learning and/or econometrics applied in a commercial context of end-to-end development lifecycle of data-driven products. Experience in Advertising/ECommerce and background in Economics is a plus.
  • Experience leading and developing cross-functional engineering and science teams. You have effective communication skills in English, with an ability to understand and translate business and user requirements across teams.
  • Experience with highly distributed, scalable and resilient software development with an understanding of an overlap between software engineering and applied science.
  • Experience with online learning, whole-page recommendation, contextual bandits, long-term lift estimation, causality or reinforcement learning is a plus.
