The Merchant is a newly created role at Peter Millar, which will provide an important role that supports Peter Millar’s planning function and will be responsible for developing a merchandising and buying strategy for the business with focus on the ecommerce and wholesale channels. The Merchant will work to develop and utilize daily/weekly/monthly reporting for analysis and distribution to support product performance. Working with the Planners, Marketing, Sales and the Line Review Director, this position will work to maximize sales, gross margin and inventory productivity by crafting merchandise assortment strategies which capture and support the creative brand strategy.  The ideal candidate for this position will be extremely organized, detail oriented and have a keen eye for understanding trends, brand strategy and merchandise performance.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains an effective day-to-day relationship with marketing, design, creative and sales, providing and incorporating feedback into merchandising strategy
  • Throughout each buy cycle partner with Design, Planning and Sales Channel managers on major product strategies and seasonal stories to execute against initiatives and strategies
  • Prior to and in season, identify changes to targeted in-store date and recommend options to maximize flow
  • Support in open-to-buy conversations and align with Planning on Class needs and inventory opportunities and risks
  • Review business each week/month/season, delivering recaps and actions based on insights and inventory composition
  • Engage and partner with sales channels to ensure understanding of merchandising recommendations and develop insights into the regional markets. Partner with Sales Channel Managers to understand specific product needs and ensure proper purchases are made, particularly for e-commerce and wholesale
  • Collaborate with the Line Review Director on strategy and the long-range category plan
  • Participate and present in the monthly and quarterly business review meetings and update planning on marketing strategies and new product introductions
  • Prepare tools for buy meetings for both seasonal & essential buys highlighting key items by channel and ensure appropriate purchases are made to cover selling strategy
  • Support Planners to ensure key items are purchased appropriately and roll up to the overall open-to-buy plan
  • Report on marketing initiatives and determine marketing effectiveness by channel to build marketing lift metrics, apply those metrics to future buys to support planning teams
  • Conduct market sizing analyses on competitor pricing and provide regular feedback to where Peter Millar is positioned in market by channel
  • Perform ad hoc analysis as needed

  • Strong understanding of season-to-season business performance and ability to drive business based on key financial indicators in order to maximize business opportunities
  • Acute eye for product and color trends
  • Aware of macro lifestyle and fashion trends and how this relates to the golf and lifestyle fashion industry
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal and demonstrative ability to present to Senior leadership
  • Ability to work independently to make sound business decision, and multitask, pivot, prioritize competing tasks and operate in a fast-paced environment
  • Expert level in Microsoft Excel; high proficiency in all other Microsoft Office tools
  • Detail oriented, extremely well organized with strong time management skills

 

DESIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • BA or BS in Business/Merchandising
  • Apparel knowledge and luxury brand experience is strongly preferred
  • Knowledge of forecasting software related to demand planning is a plus
