JOB PURPOSE

Burberry is making a major investment in expanding our data and analytics capability. Over the last few years, we have created a global omni-channel single customer view, built an outstanding and modern analytics platform, and developed a highly effective analytics and data science team. We're now building on these foundations to drive and embed data-inspired decision making across Burberry.

We are recruiting a Data Science Manager to join our fast-expanding data science team and contribute to our strategic focus on Personalisation, Precision Marketing and Customer Journeys. Utilising advanced analytics and models we aim to uncover our customer behaviours and intents and deliver targeted and personalised experiences across all customer touchpoints. The Data Science Manager together with a dedicated team of data scientists will be focusing on the personalisation of our user journeys on our digital channels.

As a Data Science Manager, you will be accountable for the data science delivery within your area. You will be responsible for setting the vision and short-term roadmap for the data science products in your area and driving your team to deliver innovative and robust analytics, models, and data products under an agile framework. You will be responsible for the exploitation of the data science products by your stakeholders and ensuring they meet the business requirements and drive business value. In addition, you will be line managing and leading a small team of very high-calibre and ambitious data scientists and be responsible for their career development.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Opportunity Scanning: Identify opportunities where data science can be embedded into their roadmaps and ensure we maximise the adoption and realised value of our data science products
  • Strategy & Planning: Set the 6-12-month technical roadmap of the data science products in your area, in alignment with your business stakeholders' objectives and wider Data Science roadmap
  • Toolset & Data Strategy: Contribute to Burberry's big data and technology roadmap with the objective to evolve and optimise your teams' work and deliverables
  • Ways of Working for Data Science: Create an environment that support productivity, pace, and agility for your team, leveraging the available platforms and tools and closely collaborating with our technology function
  • Delivery Management: Act as project lead and lead cross functional teams to deliver under an agile project-based framework. You will be responsible for ensuring excellence in your teams' day-to-day operational and project delivery
  • Project Delivery: Directly lead the technical efforts of important/complex projects, ensuring your team has clarity of the expectations from the project and their deliverables. You will be responsible about synthesising the findings and creating a coherent narrative for your stakeholders
  • Communication: Ensure that the contributions of your team are recognised and understood by your immediate stakeholders
  • Horizon Scanning: Invest in staying up to date on the latest data science, technology and consumer innovations and trends and working out where they can be leveraged at Burberry
  • People Management: Recruit, manage, and develop a small team of data scientists. You will ensure that your team is being developed, coached, and trained to their full potential.


PERSONAL PROFILE

  • Advanced degree, MSc or PhD in a quantitative field (e.g., Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Physics, Engineering etc)
  • Substantial experience in Data Science in a commercial environment
  • Experience in ecommerce business and using data science to personalise the user journey would be especially valued
  • Extensive experience across digital analytics, user journey modelling, recommender systems, deep learning is expected
  • Extensive personal portfolio of projects, both as a direct contributor and as a lead, where analytics and data science were used to drive business value and decisions
  • Strong in problem-solving, combining both a logical and innovative approach
  • Advanced, in-depth, understanding of data science concepts and extensive applications of mathematical, statistical, machine learning and deep learning techniques
  • Solid foundation in programming and proficient in Python demonstrated through broad project portfolio and wide adoption of software engineering best practices. Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks, such as PyTorch or Tensorflow is also beneficial
  • Good understanding of big data technologies and extensive experience with Spark
  • Strong desire and proven ability to continuously learn new software, technologies and methodologies and keep up with the fast-evolving field of big data
  • Experience of running a high functioning analytics and data science team, with proven ability to recruit and develop high calibre individuals at different levels of experience
  • Experience in leading projects and cross-functional teams under agile framework
  • Self-starter, proactively identifying gaps and opportunities where analytics can drive business value and translating business requirements in analytical framework
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to communicate opportunities and influence decision making and prioritisation
