Job Description:

The Interior Design Department at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) seeks qualified instructors for part-time teaching Interior Design Studio courses. The Department offers AAS and BFA degrees. In each program, there are four consecutive Design Studio courses.

In the AAS Studios, students are initially introduced to the design fundamentals and concept development and learn to apply this knowledge to gradually more complex interior spaces critically. Fact-finding skills and design analysis methods lead to developing programs that emphasize space planning, human factors, and knowledge of codes, accessibility, and sustainable design. Topics covered include design concept and analysis, color, materiality, lighting, details, graphics, building codes, global context, sustainability, social issues, and barrier- free inclusive design.

The BFA Studios introduce students to the human-centered holistic strategies and principles of integrated, evidence-based design. Students collaborate with professionals from various fields and experiment with complex sustainable design decisions to balance global and local environments, economy, human health, safety, and wellbeing. They address current social and cultural phenomena and diverse and special needs populations and collaborate with the local community. In the last year of the Program, students prepare a capstone project that synthesizes their interior design knowledge.

The candidates will exhibit a continuous ability to learn, evolve, and adapt to the profession's developments in the theory and practice of interior design and successfully communicate such knowledge to students.


AAS & BFA Studio instructors:
  • A minimum of bachelor's degree in Interior Design or Architecture, and NCIDQ Certification.
  • A minimum of six years of recent professional interior design experience with various project types. Experience in teaching college-level courses preferred.
  • Ability to advance students' skill sets regarding individual critical analysis, organization of information, and time management skills.
  • Ability to teach students how to communicate the proposed solution graphically, verbally, and through multi-media presentations appropriate to various purposes and audiences.
  • Ability to communicate design options through hand sketching and conventional delineation.
  • Knowledge of 2D / 3D CAD and experience in representation and graphic work.

Additionally, AAS Studio Instructors:
  • Knowledge and ability to teach design process that includes programming, research, concept development, and sustainability concepts.
  • Ability to apply human factors and behavioral concerns, with emphasis on inclusive design beyond ADA.
  • Ability to apply elements & principles of design, color theory, including psychological and cultural implications.
  • Knowledge and ability to teach lighting design and its application.
  • Knowledge and ability to teach application of construction methods, building codes and regulations, materials and products criteria, and selection appropriate for an overall design solution.

Additionally, BFA Studio Instructors:
  • Broad Interior Design experience in and ability to teach a design process for a wide range of complex design projects.
  • Experience and ability to guide students in implementing a successful design solution that responds to the program document and addresses all aspects of the design process.
  • Experience and ability to assist students in identifying and exploring complex problems and generating a creative solution that supports human behavior within the interior environments, enhances health, safety, welfare, and complies with laws, codes, standards, and guidelines.
  • Ability to guide students in fully developing, explaining, justifying, and defending design concepts and design decisions as they exemplify a global perspective within the parameters of ecological, socio-economic, and cultural context.
