As Zalando transforms from Europe's leading e-commerce company into The Starting Point for Fashion, Beauty and Lifestyle, this is an exciting time to join us. We are continuously innovating the way we engage with our 49M+ customers to build deeper relationships that see them return again and again.

The Pricing, Economics and Experimentation Team (zPEET) works intensively in creating a customer lifetime value (CLV) framework to help Zalando steer towards deep customer relationships and accelerate development with a Key Event Framework. Ultimately, the objective is to turn Zalando into the Starting Point for Fashion by holistically steering customer experiences and investments towards long-term customer value.
As Director of Applied Science/CLV you will be responsible for building the data platform that provides customer-level forecasted CLV and causal "key event analysis" to drive the business. This role is also responsible for raising awareness and sophistication in the use of CLV- and experimentation-related tactics and tools. There is frequent interaction with company leadership in which the key outputs of the scientific research must be distilled to strategic insights for the business.

There are two key steps in this process;
  • The estimation of the underlying values, which involves econometric and statistical analysis and the ability to create attribution links between commercial tactics and outcomes. This area requires both scientific discovery and ownership of transforming how we think about major investments central to our business.
  • The data need to be extensible, programmatically accessible and structured in such a way that stakeholders across the business can use them in customer facing applications, ML modelling and analytics dashboards.

  • The goal of the role is to drive transformative change about how we invest into markets, inclusive of market entry.

    • You'll work in an area of active scientific research:
      • causal inference using ML methods,
      • heterogeneous treatment effects,
      • structural CLV modelling in a high dimensional environment,
      • near-real-time model scoring and delivery and...
      • the overall confluence of economics and ML methods.
    • You'll get to go from the basic science to the end product, and make the strategic decisions along the way.
    • You'll have exposure to top executives and the ability to influence core company strategy.
    • You'll lead, guide and develop a super engaged team built for success.

    • You have either strong (Ph.D. level or equivalent via work experience) microeconomic fundamentals combined with "handy" product/tech skills OR strong back-end/data product/tech skills combined with undergraduate level economics.
    • You have experience outside of research or "science lab" environments and experience with shipping products.
    • Ideally you are an economist or an applied scientist who has put those skills to task in a product led environment
    • What would be super great is if you bring one or more of the following: a) experience in CLV modelling, b) managing Executive stakeholders, c) leading experimentation platforms and d) a Ph.D. level statistics and/or ML knowledge
