Created by surfboard shaping icon Bob McTavish in 1962, Mctavish is a surfing lifestyle brand born out of Byron Bay, Australia. Today, alongside son Ben, they draw on almost a century of shared design experience to handcraft a unique range of surfboards, and an apparel range with the sole goal of motivating you to spend more time in the ocean - because we always bring the joy of a surf with us onto land.


Who we are after

Mctavish has redefined the notion of ‘surf wear’. With a reputation for timelessness, quality and easy-to-wear designs, we’re looking for an experienced designer who understands the journey we are on and will push us further. With an incredible eye for design and creativity, the Apparel Head Designer will explore the gap in surfers’ hearts across multiple categories; menswear, womenswear, genderless, accessories and special projects.

  • A meticulous eye for quality and attention to unique details
  • An extensive knowledge and understanding of fibres, fabrics, trims & accessories
  • Experience with print design; briefing and collaborating with textile designers / graphic designers to execute seasonal print and colour direction (both yardage & placement prints)
  • Experience overseeing all technical aspects of apparel construction (e.g. knit/jersey, woven & fully fashioned categories)
  • An effective communicator, working with teams internally and externally, local and offshore
  • A highly organised mind and ability to work across multiple deliverables simultaneously
  • A natural problem-solver with a solutions-focussed approach and general unflappability
  • Deep understanding of off-shore/onshore manufacturing process & proven ability to work to these critical timelines, from concept & sourcing to completion and delivery
  • Experience managing individuals or a team
  • Strong experience in Microsoft Office, Adobe Illustrator and email communication
  • Bachelor's degree in design or a combination of relevant education and experience
  • 7+ years of relevant experience in a designer role

  • Copywriting skills & ability to communicate your designs through written product descriptions
  • Experience in soft goods, hard goods & surf accessory design (bags, leashes, wetsuits etc)


What you’ll work on

-This role is responsible for the complete creative design direction and successful execution of four seasonal collections per year across menswear, womenswear, swimwear and headwear categories, that align with the brand and its values

-Off-season category opportunities for work on ‘special projects’ and collaborations

-Design and develop surf hardware such as wetsuits, leashes, towels & board bags

-Fabrics, trims and hardware sourcing or development and sign off, for sampling and bulk

-Research and colour direction for the season, including handover of all colour standards

-Create presentation boards. Communicate ideas and finished collections to both internal teams and external sales agents

-Oversee all fittings and provide technical recommendations on fit and garment construction

-Develop / brief / oversee all print designs with both internal & external graphic designers

-Conceive, create and deliver high-quality collections, that deliver on need, environmental objectives and commercial viability

-Work closely with the marketing team on catalogue, e-comm & campaign photoshoot styling, production and range communication

-Work closely and continuously with the Production Manager to meet appropriate deadlines, pricing and critical pathways, as well as problem-solving supply chain & logistical demands

-Lead and inspire a small team to produce collections of the highest quality
