Job Description:

The History of Art department seeks an adjunct instructor in European Art History. The successful candidate will teach HA 112 - History of Western Art and Civilization: Renaissance to the Modern Era.

This course engages in critical study of the history of art and civilization in Western Europe, c. 1300-1789. The course introduces students to critical visual analysis and to foundational aspects of Western civilization and visual culture from the proto/early Renaissance through the Enlightenment and French Revolution, exploring the relationship between art and its historical circumstances, in a global context where relevant. The course is not an acritical hagiography of Europe's greatest hits; instructors are to avoid false narratives of unblemished cultural progress. Successful critical study of the period and of its cultural production balances analysis of successes with abuses, particularly against minority communities in Europe and indigenous populations around the world. In studying early modern Europe and its art, students should learn how its history and visual cultures have contributed constructively to today's global society as well as how that history has contributed to systemic injustices, particularly against women, people of color, LGBTQIA people, Jews, and Muslims.

In Fall 2022, it meets on Monday and Tuesday afternoons, 5:10-6:25pm. While our immediate need is for someone to teach the Fall section, we offer many sections each semester. The class is a popular one and this Fall section is already fully enrolled at 27 students.
