Job Description:

Reporting directly to the General Counsel and Secretary of the College and working as part of the Office of General Counsel ("OGC") staff, the Associate General Counsel will assist in providing general legal services on behalf of the college to all of the college's constituencies including, but not limited to, its board of trustees, senior administrators, faculty, and staff, offer legal support on a highly diverse range of issues that impact on higher education institutions, and represent the college in vendor negotiations and other legal transactions. While the focus of this position will be transactional law, the Associate General Counsel will be called upon to provide legal support in the full array of areas handled by the OGC such as, but not limited to, civil litigation and Title IX matters, government compliance, student affairs, international programs, governance, human resources, labor relations, purchasing, technology contracts, real estate, and intellectual property issues.

Essential Functions:
  • Working directly with the relevant senior and/or mid-level administrators, draft, review, and revise purchasing agreements, license agreements, inter-institutional agreements both domestic and international, entertainment agreements, and diverse vendor contracts.
  • Address directly or oversee the representation of outside counsel in the resolution of disputes confronting the college.
  • Field a wide range of legal inquiries from departments college wide and auxiliary organizations.
  • Prepare documentation necessary to implement program initiatives such as MOU's (both domestic and international), inter-institution collaborations, scholarships, grants, student waivers and permissions, documentation for museum exhibitions, library acquisitions and loans, and agreements for industry sponsored student contests.
  • Oversee the timely and appropriate responses to requests for records and other information for the college including, but not limited to, Freedom of Information Law {FOIL) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FER PA) requests to the college.
  • Conduct legal research and analysis and draft legal memoranda.
  • Draft correspondence and reports on behalf of the OGC.
  • Represent the OGC at various administrative meetings, legislative hearings and intercollegiate meetings of college and university counsel.
  • Such other related duties as may arise from time to time in support of the efforts of the OGC and the college.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:
    • Juris Doctorate and license to practice in New York State.
    • Minimum of seven (7) to ten (10) years' experience in transactional legal work and contracts.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
    • Flexibility and ability to handle multiple projects, both large and small, simultaneously.
    • Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a high-pressured environment.
    • Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations and meet time deadlines.
    • Ability to work independently and take initiative when appropriate as well as to work cooperatively with the legal team and with colleagues throughout the college administration.
    • Ability to communicate and interact comfortably with a diverse community and members of multiple constituencies including senior administrators, staff, faculty, students, trustees, external
      professionals, and vendors.
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
    • Highest level of research and analytical skills.
    • Sound judgment and high degree of integrity and discretion.

    Preferred Qualifications:
    • Legal support of higher education institution attained either in a law firm and/or in-house.

    Additional Information:

    Days/Hours: M-F, 9am-5pm, in person; work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.
    Salary Range Transparency: $185,000.00 - $200,000.00 per year
