Job Description:

The FIT Writing and Speaking Studio seeks applicants for part-time professional writing and speaking consultant positions beginning with the fall 2023 semester. Professional consultants represent the Writing and Speaking Studio in tutorial sessions, classroom visits, and in a variety of online and in-person interactions with other members of the FIT academic community.

Individuals with experience in tutoring and/or teaching writing and/or oral communication/public speaking should consider applying. Professional consultants provide students with feedback and guidance on writing and speaking projects for any FIT course and for students' professional and personal projects; professional consultants may meet with FIT faculty and staff to provide feedback on manuscripts, presentation materials, grant applications, etc. Professional consultants provide mentorship to peer consultants developing their knowledge of contemporary language and literacy learning and rhetorical awareness and honing their practice as writing and speaking tutors.

Professional consultants should demonstrate an interest in collaborative learning and the peer-tutoring model and in supporting faculty through the Writing and Speaking Studio's writing and communication across the curriculum programming. Responsibilities for both positions include:
  • tutoring students in written and oral communication;
  • mentoring undergraduate and graduate peer writing and speaking consultants;
  • assisting the directors with and participating in ongoing staff and faculty education;
  • conducting classroom informational visits and workshops;
  • developing resources for teaching and learning;
  • and, supporting day-to-day operations of the Writing and Speaking Studio.

Requirements:

Candidates with or pursuing a Master's degree or higher in Composition Studies, Communication Studies, or a related field. Experience teaching and/or tutoring writing or public speaking in a professional setting; writing or communication center experience and faculty development experience preferred. Ability to work productively and respectfully with a diverse student population. Individuals with experience working in a writing/communication center using a peer-tutoring model are strongly encouraged to apply.

Additional Information:

The hourly rate for this position is $30 per hour.

Work schedule

Day/Hours: Must be able to work during FIT Writing and Speaking Studio hours of operation, including at least two shifts per week that include evening (M-Th until 8 pm) and/or weekend hours (Sa 1-4; Sun 3-7), in person; work schedule subject to change based on needs of the department.
