Job Description

As our Design Director of our Women’s Footwear and Accessories, you will lead a team of two to create innovative yet timeless new shoes and handbags. From product concept to final details, your team is responsible for the design vision of our the collection. To this end, you will work closely with the Director of Product Development and Production as well as the Materials Sourcing Lead to source and execute new materials, executions and designs. 
You’ll also work closely with your Merchandising partner to shape the line plan and ensure our assortment is meeting business needs. In this explosively growing segment of our business, we are looking for an entrepreneur and inspiring leader who has impeccable taste, deep technical knowledge, and loves a challenge. 
You will report directly to the General Manager of Footwear and Accessories, and be based in our San Francisco office. 

The Ideal Candidate

Your day-to-day:

  • Brainstorm new product concepts with GM, Merchandising partner and cross-functional thought-partners
  • Identify and source references for inspiration, qualities and constructions
  • Partner with PD to identify new manufacturing and material needs
  • Present Big Ideas quarterly to Executive Team
  • Delegate and contribute to sketching/color ups; manage creation of tech packs
  • Lead review and passing comments on each proto round
  • Manage selection of material/component qualities
  • Prepare and present quarterly sketch reviews
  • Incorporate product performance information into new developments
  • Travel to vendors/factories world-wide to partner and comment on protos as necessary

We'd love to hear from you if you have:

  • Minimum 10 years of experience designing women’s leather dress shoes and handbags
  • MA or BA in design
  • Experience with fit, color and materials
  • Deep technical knowledge of footwear constructions, componentry
  • Ability to travel abroad 4 times per year
  • Extensive experience in Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop

A day in this role: 

  • Meet with PD partner to discuss long-lead sourcing needs for new construction/sub-category
  • Work with team to create color pitch by style for SMS order
  • Sketch a new sandal group
  • Meet with Material Sourcing Lead to review article options to trigger for sampling
  • Trouble-shoot a tricky fit proto with PD partner and factory via video-conference
  • Review business performance with Merchant team to understand successes and opportunities at style-color level
  • Join a commercialization Fit Session to sign off on final design lines
  • Review proto comments with team before passing to PD
  • Review/edit Big Ideas deck with design team, Merch and GM in preparation for presentation
