Job Description

PRIMARY ROLE

This is an opportunity for a well-rounded, hands-on and experienced Merchandising expert to evolve the offering of a growing luxury brand. This individual will serve as a key member of the team, using his/her expertise to enable the brand to continue its trajectory and meet aggressive growth objectives. The successful candidate will be responsible for the company’s product assortment and serve as a connector and problem solver across all departments. This position is a key executive position, and will be a valued advisor to both the CEO and Creative Director. Specific areas of responsibility include:

I. MARKET INTELLIGENCE & BRAND BUILDING

This person has a finger on the plus of the market and acts as a key partner to the CEO and Creative Director in evaluating the brand position on an ongoing basis, specifically from a pricing and assortment point of view. Paramount in this endeavor is a solid understanding of competitive landscape and firm grasp of opportunity areas.

Role and Responsibilities Include but are not entirely limited to:

  • Develop semi-annual merchandising strategy plan for management
  • Conduct market research to be aware of latest style/pricing/trends
  • Create reporting that serves the internal organization in order to share learning from market across various teams
  • Communicate openly with management on an ongoing basis about the perceived strengths and weakness of the brand and highlight areas of concern in real time
  • Establish credibility throughout the team as an effective developer of solutions to various challenges
  • Partner with all department heads to drive new initiatives and problem solve at various stages in the life-cycle of the collection
  • Work with CEO on preparation of merchandising materials for Board of Directors meetings
  • Participate in key wholesale appointments in order to gain direct feedback from our partners

 II. COLLECTION PLANNING & DESIGN SUPPORT

The VP of Merchandising works alongside the design team from the first inspiration meeting to help ensure the collection is not only editorial, but also commercially oriented. 

Role and Responsibilities Include but are not entirely limited to:

  • Create seasonal financial and style/sku line plans based off of seasonal sales budget target as well as prior selling, new opportunities and trends
  • Partner with design to build the collection based on line plan and then edit the collection to meet sales needs
  • Maintain development calendar key dates to ensure on time delivery for market
  • Work with design to maintain brand integrity throughout the creation cycle
  • Work with Studio Director on ensuring budget is available for declinations of key editorial stories
  • Work with Studio Director, Product Development and Production to problem solve and make difficult stories suitable for sales
  • Work across all categories (RTW, LG & Shoes) to ensure the collection is cohesive and maintains a clear through-line
  • Establish target pricing goals to negotiate pricing for fabrics and finished goods
  • Partner with production on calendar and to determine early projection fabrics
  • Partner with production for efficiency of styles offered, counter sourcing and timing
  • Provide end of season feedback analysis with clear take-aways to inform upcoming collections

III. PRICING & SALES STRATEGY

The VP of Merchandising works as the glue between design, development, production and sales to set wholesale and retail prices. The ultimate goal is to deliver a collection with an offering that showcases the design direction, aligns with market expectations and at the same time delivers strong margins for the brand.

Role and Responsibilities Include but are not entirely limited to:

  • Merchandise and price collection to ensure gross margin goals
  • Balance assortment within fabrics, categories, silhouettes and colors
  • Review pricing with management in advance of sales
  • Work to streamline fabrics being purchased in order to be efficient in production
  • Partner with sales on showroom response, sell thru analysis and in-store feedback and filter to design
  • Present to sales key design ideas, styles and objectives for the season
  • Partner with sales to determine new product opportunities, re-cuts or exclusive opportunities 

The Ideal Candidate

Technical Requirements:

  • Financial modeling and pricing ability
  • Previous senior role in merchandising a must
  • International development and production experience
  • Retail and wholesale RTW, Leather Goods and Shoes merchandising
  • Knowledge of luxury goods market landscape
  • Italian fluency preferred
