About Us

Wales Bonner explores a distinctive notion of luxury via a hybrid of European and African influences. Informed by broad research that encompasses critical theory, composition, literature and historical sources, Wales Bonner creates culturally relevant ideas for our global clientele. The company was established in 2014, following the success of Afrique, Grace Wales Bonner’s graduate collection at Central Saint Martins, which won the L’Oreal Professionnel Award.

Afrique, underscored the signatures that would come to define the brand’s aesthetic; a focus on disrupting classical tailoring, artisanal embellishment that reflected hybrid perspectives and a slender, adorned silhouette, both soulful and elegant. Wales Bonner presented her first solo presentation during London Fashion Week Men. While Ebonics sought to represent a broad spectrum of black masculinity, via a rich interweaving of historical narratives, the collection resonated with both men and women. In response, Wales Bonner has evolved to encompass a focused womenswear and accessories offering. Collaborations include shoes with Manolo Blahnik and millinery with Stephen Jones. Further accolades followed, Wales Bonner was awarded Emerging Menswear Designer’ at the British Fashion Awards in 2015. A year later, she received the LVMH Young Designer Prize, elevating the brand to new levels of visibility.  Wales Bonner is now stocked in 23 stores throughout Europe, Asia and America, stockists including Dover Street Market, Selfridges, Matches, 10 Corso Como, and Joyce. Receiving wide recognition, Wales Bonner has presented at the Serpentine Gallery, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the ICA. Hans Ulrich Obrist is a notable supporter, as is Duro Olowu who included her work in Making and Unmaking, an exhibition at the Camden Arts Centre in 2016. Grace has also lectured at F.I.T and Parsons in New York.  Wales Bonner’s vision is expansive and multidisciplinary. Meet the Wrestlers, The Love with Which I Wash and Practice,  films created in collaboration with acclaimed photographer Harley Weir have become an evolving influence on the collections. Everythings for Real I & II zines produced in collaboration with Ditto press provide further insight Wales Bonner’s wider literary influences. Music is also intrinsic to the research process, key collaborators include Sampha, Elysia Crampton and Dev Hynes. In essence, through collaboration Wales Bonner seeks to explore the parameters of value and representation.
