The New Zealander, who secured his big break with an i-D magazine cover shoot in 1998, has worked alongside some of the industry’s most influential stylists and photographers such as Grace Coddington , Joe McKenna , Mario Testino and Bruce Weber , and has created catwalk looks for the likes of Kenzo, Comme des Garçons, Givenchy, Dior Homme and L’Wren Scott. De Mey has also collaborated on editorials for publications including CR Fashion Book, Interview, Purple and Self Service. In 2008, he was appointed international artistic creative director of makeup for Lancôme cosmetics.
Despite having no formal training, De Mey was signed to the François Nars talent agency upon arrival in New York in 1997, landing the i-D shoot that served as the launch pad for his career. The budding artist, who attended the Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design in Auckland (studying painting, art history, sculpture and photography) cut his teeth working on music videos and advertising campaigns for the likes of Levi’s, Australian designer Marilyn Sainty and EziBuy, an Australian clothing retailer.
