Dr. Amina Al Rustamani is the force behind Dubai's efforts to become an innovative global fashion, design and business centre. Al Rustamani is the chief executive of Tecom Investments, a business park operator owned by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and is responsible for developing the Dubai Design District (D3), the 2 million-square-metre complex, costing approximately $1.1 billion, which is set for completion in 2015.
In addition, Rustamani founded the Dubai Design and Fashion Council, where she is chairman, with the aim to provide a unified platform for fashion in Dubai. The council is a state-funded body. It organises fashion events in the city and has plans to set up a design school with students from around the world, aiming to specialise in Islamic design. Through D3 and is partners, Rustamani aims to nurture the Middle East's fashion designers of the future.
