Jimin, or Park Ji-min, is the lead vocalist of Korean boyband BTS, or Bangtan Boys, managed under the label Big Hit. He is one of seven members of the K-pop group and one of the most high-profile celebrities in Korea.
In June 2019, BTS made waves during their world tour by performing in looks based on the utilitarian and futuristic sportswear silhouettes of Kim Jones ' Pre-Fall 2019 collection for Dior. It was the first time that the French luxury house has created men’s stage wear for a pop band, and it is the K-pop industry’s most high-profile sponsorship to date.
Born in Busan, South Korea, the K-pop artist studied contemporary dance at Busan High School of Arts and graduated in 2013 — the same year BTS was formed. Jimin’s K-pop counterparts currently includes RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, V and Jungkook. He is currently enrolled at the Cyber University of Korea with other BTS members.
Crowned one of the most tweeted-about celebrities in 2017, BTS has since made it onto Billboard charts, the Grammys and the United Nations — the K-pop band with the largest global influence. Their world tour will be the most-attended tour ever by a Korean artist, and the group — which has fronted covers of Time Magazine, Rolling Stone and Billboard — reportedly brings in $3.6 billion into South Korea's economy annually.
According to local media, BTS members allegedly “personally purchase the outfits that they want to wear.” However, the group has had numerous ambassadorships with the likes of Puma, Lotte Duty Free and local beauty brands Mediheal and VT.
The group’s music often addresses social issues including the South Korean education system, which Jimin personally supports. In 2016 and 2018, the singer and dancer covered uniform expenses for the graduates of his former school, Busan Hodong Elementary School. In 2019, Jimin also donated ₩100 million (about $88,000) to the Busan Department of Education to support lower income students.
BTS has produced six albums, including their first Dark & Wild in 2014, Wings in 2016 and Face Yourself in 2018. The group has won multiple awards, including Asia Artist Awards’ Artist of the Year in 2018, Golden Disc Awards’ Most Popular K-pop Star in 2019 and Billboard Music Awards’ Top Group in 2019. In 2018, the boyband also won MTV’s Best Group and Biggest Fans award, reflective of their large following known as ARMY, standing for Adorable Representative M.C. for Youth.
